Hello ifeminists:

I hope you all stayed well and safe during 9/11. The anniversary was
a quiet day for me. I couldn't stand to watch the television broadcasts and
buried myself in work instead, which is the main way I handle stress. These
days, we all seem quick tempered, less emotionally flexible, more likely to
frown than smile at strangers -- in short, stressed out. Try to remember
that the good things in life, the most important parts -- family, friends,
ideals, dreams -- exist now as they did pre-9/11. The people who needed you
then still need you now.

The editorials for this week are posted on the front page. My
FOXNews/ifeminists column, "Dirty Dealings Kill Men's Panel"
<http://www.ifeminists.com/introduction/editorials/2002/0917.html>; and a
very nice piece by Glenn Sacks and Diane Thompson entitled "High-Profile
'Deadbeat Dad' Raids Won't Fix Child Support System Badly in Need of Reform"

Last Sunday, Carol Moore was a gracious and entertaining guest in the
chat room jointly sponsored by ifeminists and mensactivism.org, where the
talk turned to war. Many thanks Carol! This Sunday, I want to invite anyone
who is interested in grass roots activism regarding the sabotage of the New
Hampshire Commission on the Status of Men -- the first state men's
commission in the U.S., and not tax-funded! -- to come and discuss the
issue, its ramifications, what we can do to rescue the commission, etc. (See
the FOXNews/ifeminsits editorial above for details.) I'll be there and some
of the main figures in this drama are expected to show up. Sunday, September
22nd, 9:00 p.m. EST <http://www.ifeminists.com/interaction/chat>. I look
forward to seeing you there.

Not to nag BUT any donations at all to ifeminists.com would be much
appreciated. We function on the thinnest of shoe-strings and not a cent is
wasted. Info on how to contribute is right after my sig-line below.

Thanks!

Now ... onto the main event...

CA passes broad abortion-rights legislation
----------
Christian Science Monitor
With most states hostile to extending abortion rights, the
package of pro-choice bills just passed in California is
remarkable. Indeed, it may well be the most ambitious
abortion-rights in US history, including a guarantee to
abortion access even in Roe v. Wade is overturned. (09/13/02)

Feminism's slide since 9/11
----------
Reason
by Cathy Young
Young speculates on why "the feminist movement, already at
low ebb, has slid further into irrelevancy." One reason?
The feminist championing of Afghan women may have
backfired by giving the public a glimpse of women who
are truly oppressed and who have reason to complain. (09/17/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/537845365.html

Nothing to wear, nowhere to hide
----------
London Sunday Herald
by Lesley McDowell, reviewer
Fay Weldon was once lionised as a feminist extraordinaire

Why we wanted a 'designer baby'
----------
Auckland Sunday Star-Times
by staff
New Zealand's first designer baby has been kept a secret by
her parents. Now they speak. They chose her from 11
embryos because she was free of spinal muscular atrophy,

----------
Glenn J. Sacks
by Glenn Sacks and Dianna Thompson
"In highly publicized raids, federal agents have hauled in
69 'deadbeat dads' and are still hunting for 33 more.
The Bush administration boasts that it is sending a
message to deadbeats. However, the high-living deadbeat
dad who stiffs his kids is largely a mythical creature."

Making some sense of 9/11
----------
ifeminists
by Wendy McElroy
As the world ricochets between justified anger and fear
over terrorism, many people feel that individuals exert
no influence over events. But the most powerful force in
