   Hello ifeminists:

A gracious "hello" to all ifeminists. There's a lot to report so I'll
plunge right into it.

On May 23rd through May 30th, I will be on the Laissez Faire Books
author's board
<http://www.laissezfairebooks.com/cgi-local/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?conf=DCConfI
D1> to discuss ifeminism in general and the new ifeminist anthology "Liberty
for Women" in particular. Come post your questions and I'll be sure to
answer them. Registration is required but it is free and easy. And, while
you are being sociable, drop by the jointly-sponsored ifeminist/mensactivism
chat room <http://www.ifeminists.com/interaction/chat> this Sunday, the
26th, at 9:00 p.m. EST where I will be hostessing with a special guest to
answer questions on the future of sexuality in North America: prostitution,
pornography, abstinence ... the current trends and the impact of old ones.

Again, it is free and easy.

By the end of today, we will have posted the new contest entry form at
the top right-hand side on the front page of ifeminists.com. This is a new
concept. We've starting the Ifeminist Book Shelf containing several dozen
books which will be restocked regularly. We intend to run contests every two
weeks with the prize being a book spree, allowing the winner to choose any
15 books she/he wishes from the shelves. You have to be a member of IFC to
enter but ... well ... do the words "free and easy" sound familiar. ;-)

I will be speaking for National Coalition of Free Men on June 21st
<http://ncfm-tc.8m.com/news.htm> at a conference in the Twin Cities that is
timed to coincide with NOW's National convention. This counter-conference
will be preceded by a protest against NOW's anti-male, pro-government
policies to be held outside the hotel where its national convention is
occurring. If you can, please come to the protest (contact
jason@jdtalley.com for possible info about transportation) and attend the
event as well!. Warren Farrell and Trudy Schuett are also speaking.

The new editorials have been posted on the front page of ifeminists.com:
"Feminists Claim Motherhood as a Liberal Cause" by me
<http://www.ifeminists.com/introduction/editorials/2002/0521.html> and "The
Price of Fatherhood" by Glenn R. Sacks
<http://www.ifeminists.com/introduction/editorials/2002/0521a.html>.

Now ... onto the main event ...

                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

Up to mom to stop sex?
----------
The Spokesman Review
Young Vili Fualaau fathered two children with his
sixth-grade teacher. Now Vili and his mother are asking
a court to find the school district and the Des Moines
Police Department liable for failing to prevent the
relationship. They are seeking $2.4 million in damages.
But, the defense asks, shouldn't the mother be
   responsible? (05/16/02)

Not-so-straight shooters?
----------
The Southern Voice
"When a gay bartender and community activist in Knoxville,
Tenn., was found dead ... gay men and lesbians in the
small city reacted with shock and fear. At least one
vowed to fight back. Carl Cate said the death of Joseph
Camber, a homicide that remains unsolved, inspired him
to launch Knoxville's chapter of the Pink Pistols, a gay
gun group that now cites 29 chapters in 19 states." (05/21/02)

University mandates ideological 'loyalty oath'
----------
CNS News
People who sign up for "Women's Studies 797" at the
Univeristy of South Carolina -- a required course for a
certificate of graduate study -- must "acknowledge that
racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, and other
institutional forms of oppression exist." (05/15/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/554894521.html

Abortion issue stalls bankruptcy bill
----------
Los Angeles Times
The abortion-related dispute stems from a new bankruptcy
bill passed by the House and Senate. The Senate added a
provision aimed at preventing abortion opponents from
declaring bankruptcy to avoid paying fines resulting
from violent protests at abortion clinics. (05/21/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/659937355.html

Shocking sex imbalance in China
----------
The Guardian
"An alarming rise in the sex ratio of newborn infants in
China suggests that increasing numbers of female
foetuses are being aborted by parents intent on having a
male child." Some regions have 130 male births per 100
female. Many point an accusing finger at China's
   one-child policy. (05/13/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/37482009.html

Extreme anti-abortionists do not enjoy free speech
----------
San Jose Mercury News
A federal appeals court has refused to extend free speech
   protections to incendiary anti-abortion rhetoric,
concluding that an Oregon jury was right to punish
anti-abortion activists for threatening doctors on
grisly Web sites and Wild West-style "Wanted" posters.

http://www.free-market.net/rd/488033968.html

Supreme Court partially upholds Child Protection Act
----------
Washington Post
The divided Supreme Court partly upheld a law intended to
shield children from online pornography, but said
unresolved free speech questions will prevent the law
from taking effect now. The Court found that the law's
use of "community standards" to define what is harmful
to children does not make the law unconstitutional, as a
   lower court had ruled. (05/13/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/54981345.html

Abortion services becoming inaccessible
----------
Working for Change
Nationally, 86 percent of all U.S. counties and 95 percent
of all rural U.S. counties have no abortion provider,
according to "Fact Sheet: The Shortage of Abortion
Providers," prepared by the Abortion Access Project. (05/17/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/69741892.html

Working families phased out of tax breaks
----------
WorldNetDaily
Two-income families who file jointly are shouldering a
vastly disproportionate share of federal tax load,
partly because they lose write-offs for children, etc. (05/15/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/529525135.html

Abortion stalls UN family planning
----------
Washington Post
By a 32 to 30 vote, the House Appropriations Committee has
voted to delete language from an emergency spending bill
that would have forced the Bush administration to

Unwanted sex
----------
Reason
by Kenneth Green
Harvard has adopted a new policy under which sexual assault
complaints will be investigated by the school's
administrative board only if there is some corroborating

   for true gender equity. (05/14/02)

http://www.free-market.net/rd/492304492.html

----------
BBC
by staff
The Department of Health in England is currently deciding
what information should be given to people born as a
result of sperm, egg or embryo donation. This site
offers public commentary, most of which advocates donor
anonymity as a protection from financial, moral, and
   personal backlash. (05/17/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/495004737.html

More morphing on morph-porn bill
----------
Wired
by Declan McCullagh
"Vermont's Patrick Leahy adores the Grateful Dead, lauds
Ben and Jerry's ice cream and is known as one of the
Senate's most ardent civil libertarians. But the
Democratic head of the Judiciary Committee said this
week that even though he believes a new child
pornography bill may violate the First Amendment, he's
   co-sponsoring it anyway." (05/18/02)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/369182312.html

Boys and girls are different -- film at 11!

The federal No Child Left Behind Act departed from 30 years
of thinking on how to ensure educational equality. For
example, it opens the door to same-sex -- e.g. all-girl,

Why innovation is better for women than litigation
----------
Pacific Research Institute
by Sally C. Pipes
In the Microsoft case, "Braceras and Pfotenhauer conclude

http://www.free-market.net/rd/788846212.html

Clones attack Congress
----------
Reason
by Ronald Bailey
Or is it the other way around? Bailey speculates on why ...
"In recent years, a lot of ethical handwaving and
bloviation has been expended trying to convince the
public it would be immoral for a healthy human clone to
   be born." (05/16/02)
