Hello ifeminists:
Today's editorial comments are a bit more somber than usual. As many
of you know, I have been trying to support the Men's Movement -- that loose
coalition of individuals and organizations that work toward true legal
equality of the genders, especially in areas such as the reform of child
custody laws. Their cause is a just one. That is why there is a "Men's
Movement" section at ifeminists, my FOX News column features issues such as
male suicide in relation to child support laws, editorials from men appear
on the front page, and there is an enforced policy of civility toward men on
the BB. I have met wonderful people as a result: My good buddy James
Hanback, the incredible Warren Farrell with whom I am discussing possible
joint ventures, Scott Garman who works to the point of burn-out for men's
rights, Glenn Sacks with his impish tho' serious writing style ... and I am
only mentioning a few names.
There has also been a frightening amount of abuse from a segment of
the movement that seems to be in love with their anger toward women. The
indiscriminate rage directed toward anyone female reminds me of nothing so
much as the reverse situation in the early days of radical feminism. It
doesn't come merely from the extreme factions ... which means, I frankly do
not know what to do about it -- or even whether "doing" anything is
possible. I am actively turning over the issue in my mind and I want to hear
from ifeminist members who have constructive suggestions.
It is Tuesday, which means new editorials are posted on our front
page: "Wrongful Life"
<http://www.ifeminists.com/introduction/editorials/2002/0319.html> by me and
"California Paternity Justice Act: If the Genes Don't Fit, You Must Acquit"
by Glenn Sacks. Enjoy.
I also want to thank the ineffable Sunni Maravillosa (see her photo as
ifeminist of the month for March <http://www.ifeminists.com>) for
volunteering to take over moderation of the jointly sponsored
ifeminist/mensactivism chat room each Sunday. Sunni is not available until
early April so I will not be scheduling guests or, indeed, showing up myself
in the chat room for the next few weeks. It will open anew with Sunni at the
helm. My reaffirmed thanks to her.
Now, onto to the main event...
