Hello ifeminists:

Congratulations to the winners of last week's ifeminist book draw: Mary
Ellen S., Jeanmarie T., and Bill B. And many thanks to author/prostitute
rights activist Tracy Quan for graciously adding three of her own books
(autographed, of course!) to this week's draw, raising the number of prizes
to six. They are: three copies of the erotic adventure novel "Diary of a
Manhattan Call Girl: A Nancy Chan Novel" by Tracy; an original copy of Emma
Goldman's "Mother Earth" magazine (December 1908) which features an article
by ifeminist Voltairine de Cleyre; "Violent Men, Violent Couples: The
Dynamics of Domestic Violence"; and, "Talk Dirty to Me: An Intimate
Philsophy of Sex" by Sallie Tisdale (book box has slight damage, I'm
afraid). Chances of winning are high! Especially if you enter every week.

Speaking of Tracy... she is doing a whirlwind of PR, giving so many
lectures and interviews that it is difficult to keep up with her. The best
way to do so is to check into the website that lists her daily schedule.
<http://www.tracyquan.net/> You go girl!

December's ifeminist-of-the-month is Jennifer Roback Morse, a research
fellow for the Hoover Institution. For those of you who think that
designation is sexist, just think of Jennie as the "swell gal" of the
Institute.

Last Sunday's joint ifeminist/mensactivism chat was well attended and a
lot of fun. This Sunday, at 9:00 p.m. EST we're going to gather at the
ifeminists.com chat room <http://www.ifeminists.com/interaction/chat/> to
discuss the rights and responsibilities of men regarding abortion, and what
impact a re-definition of men's role have on women? The chat room is free
and easy to use ... just be patient while the program loads. I'll be waiting
in the chat room to say "hello."

I am pleased to see that the Bulletin Board is returning to feminism
after 3 months of understandable preoccupation with nothing but the war. If
you are interested in a foreshadowing of the Sunday chat room, the "men's
role in abortion" issue is sparking hot debate. You're welcome to join in or
just browse.

     Now...onto the main event.

Merit, not gender, counts
----------
The Age
by Hugh MacKay
MacKay makes a persuasive case, "I once heard a woman

"Every school shooting is blamed on violence in the media.
Joe Camel, until he was outlawed, was blamed for every
teenager who took up smoking. ... The media's role in

The gender element in Stalin's mass murder
----------
Gendercide Watch
Under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin, tens of millions
of ordinary individuals were executed or imprisoned in
labour camps that were little more than death camps.
Gender played an important role, and in many respects
the Purge period of Soviet history can be considered the
worst gendercide of the twentieth century.
