Hello ifeminists:

I am always at a loss for words these days. Yet a great deal is going
on that you should know about.

The Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute
<http://www.cblpolicyinstitute.org>, in co-ordination with The Heritage
Foundation, is holding a by-invitation-only Tribute to Barbara Olsen at
November's Conservative Women's Network Luncheon. The event will be covered
by C-Span. Many thanks to Lisa De Pasquale, head of CBLPI, for inviting
me/ifeminists.com.

I have several speaking engagements at various universities next
month. The ones that are solid so far are: Nov. 5th at Willamette University
in Oregon on pornography; U. of Colorado on the 6th and Clemson (SC) on the
8th, both on prostitution. Each engagement will be a vigorous debate between
radical feminist Kathleen Barry and me, followed by an extended Q&A. If
you're in town, drop by and say hello.

Because of feedback from ifeminist members, I will continue posting
the FOX News column to the web site <http://www.ifeminists.com/> even when
it does not directly discuss women's issues. This week's editorial provides
four constructive suggestions on how to combat terrorism. I invite readers
to send me their ideas on what steps -- even small ones -- can be taken on a
personal level.

Of course, the ifeminist BB has been abuzz about little else but the
war since September 11th. The discussion represents the sharp division that
many organizations are currently confronting between those who are (for want
of better terms) "pro" and "anti" war. For example, long-time ifeminist Hank
R. explains how some LP members are reacting to Harry Browne's rather strong
anti-war statements.

      Now...onto the main event...

Women's conference hijacked by anti-US activists
----------
Canada.com
The Canadian government is still scrambling to deal with
the PR disaster caused by a feminist who told a cheering
audience of feminists that US foreign policy --
which she claims has "drenched" the world with blood --
is more dangerous than terrorism. The Secretary of State
for Multiculturalism and the Status of Women, who was in
   attendance, may be fired. (10/02/01)

Afghan women risk lives to expose Taliban
----------
Houston Chronicle
   RAWA -- a 2,000-member, all-female organization -- is
fighting for the rights of Afghan women against the
Taliban. Some members risk their lives by running
underground schools to educate girls. (10/07/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/796871129.html

60+-year-old women bare all for charity
----------
Associated Press
Wearing little more than pearls and smiles, more than two
dozen women, all older than 60, have brought new meaning
to dropping everything to help charity. The "Still
Magnolia" calendar seems to be a great sales-success
   already. (10/06/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/835083081.html

Female foes of Taliban seeking support abroad
----------
Washington Post
Women have been subjected to especially draconian
restrictions by the totalitarian Taliban rulers of
Afghanistan. A women's resistance movement, the
Revolutionary Association for the Women of Afghanistan,
is drumming up support around the world. (10/08/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/475370665.html

'Nuremberg Files' head to court -- again
----------
Feminist Majority
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has agreed to review the
"Nuremberg Files" case, in which a court originally held
that "wanted" posters and web sites offering personal
information on abortionists were threats and not
protected speech. The decision was reversed on appeal
and may be reversed again. (10/04/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/526844395.html

San Francisco bans internet filters at public library
----------
Freedom Forum
Despite federal law mandating internet filters in public
libraries, San Francisco's Board of Supervisors voted
unanimously to ban them. The federal law has been
protested by ACLU (among others) who call it a violation
   of the First Amendment. (10/03/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/951210691.html

Women in Black oppose war
----------
Women's Enews
"Women in Black, an international network of women
protesting war, holds silent vigils worldwide to protest
U.S. plans to wage war following the Sept. 11 terror
attacks. Their silence also underscores women's historic
   voicelessness." (10/04/01)

Dutch sex workers launch union
----------
BBC
A year after the Dutch government lifted its ban on
brothels, workers in the sex industry have announced
they are forming the Netherlands' first trade union for
   prostitutes. (10/02/01)

An underground for abused children
----------
Women's Enews
by Miriam Raftery
In custody disputes involving sexual abuse claims, some
mothers take children underground; others flee the
country. Although custody disputes seem to generally
favor the mother, when a woman endures such sacrifice it
certainly raises questions about the validity of her
   accusations. (10/07/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/804751974.html

Companies that treat working moms well
----------
Salon
by Maria Coder
Working Woman magazine has released its 16th annual list of
the 100 companies that treat working mothers well. For
example, the Swedish airline SAS AB provides take-home
dinners three times a week. (10/08/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/236362333.html

Women worry aloud about war
----------
Women's Enews
by Sarah Stewart Taylor
Some women lawmakers say military force will not end but
increase terrorism, while others support a decisive
well-planned military strategy. Still others say
Americans should turn inward, re-examine U.S. foreign
policy and ask, "Why are we so hated?" (10/09/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/220241755.html

Ugandan women struggle for property rights
----------
Pacific Research Institute
by Joelle Cowan
"The right to own property is a key component of freedom.
The women of Uganda want this freedom, and they are
willing to fight for it, despite continuous cultural and
   political opposition." (09/21/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/639941334.html

Bioethicist argues for killing disabled newborns
----------
Associated Press
by Harry R. Weber
Bioethicist Peter Singer got a respectful reception from a
conference organized by the New Hampshire Governor's
Commission on Disabilities when he argued that it is
morally acceptable to kill severely disabled newborn
   babies. (10/05/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/581057035.html

A critical take on Maher's political incorrectness
----------
Weekly Standard
by John Podhoretz
An unsympathetic Podhoretz writes, "In the space of five
days, a man named Bill Maher, who hosts a late-night
program called Politically Incorrect on the ABC network,
underwent a kind of public nervous breakdown on national
television." This is a chronicle of those five days.

US allies who torture women and gays
----------
Village Voice
by Michelangelo Signorile
Some of America's new allies -- e.g. Saudi Arabia and Egypt
-- openly oppress women and gays. The author believes
that the U.S. must speak up about their human rights
abuses at the same time that it forms a coalition
against terror. Otherwise, what is the U.S. fighting for
when it claims to be preserving freedom? (10/03/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/14164475.html

Sex selection -- should it be permitted?
----------
Reason Online
by Ronald Bailey
"It is sometimes ethical to let parents choose their
children’s sex, according to John Robertson, acting
chairman of the ethics committee for the American
Society for Reproductive Medicine. This opinion set off
a storm of controversy last week." Is it ethical for
government to deny parents that choice? (10/03/01)

fiction." Use totally meaningless but utterly PC jargon,
