Hello ifeminists:
Calling all aspiring columnists! It's time for The Charlotte
Observer's seventh annual Columnist Search for a writer to provide monthly
editorials. <http://www.charlotte.com/observer/opinion/0909colsearch.htm>
Thanks to Linda Rader for forwarding this heads-up. And, please, if any of
you are successful in applying for a column, let us know so that we can
feature your work on a monthly basis.
I have received a request for an ifeminist presence, as follows...."I
am a producer for counterSpin, a national debate show on CBC Newsworld. I am
looking for intelligent and informed participants in our studio audience for
our show tonight, Wednesday, October 3rd in downtown Toronto." The show will
be live, at the CBC building in Toronto at 25 John St. (corner Front) on
Wednesday, October 3rd. Audience members need to pre-register. If you are
able to contribute to the show by your presence, contact Leslie Stojsic,
Audience Producer, at (416) 646-5211.
I am still writing columns on war, not feminism, for FOX News (even
though the column runs under the title "the ifeminist") and I am posting
separate weekly pieces on the ifeminists.com site which address feminist
issues directly. I make the separation consciously because each member's
stand on the War is a matter of her or his own conscience and I do not
introduce it as a litmus test.
The wisest words I know..."If you want peace, work for justice."
Now...onto the main event.

Rapist's parents to go on trial
----------
"The parents of a convicted rapist will go to trial on

a secret." (09/24/01)

Prisons push ban on nudie magazines
----------
"Hardcore pornography is already banned in state prisons.
Now corrections officials want to extend that ban to
almost any publication featuring nudity, including ...
magazines such as Playboy." Officals offer the typical
feminist argument that porn desensitizes men. Meanwhile
prisons are under attack for not stopping gay rape.

DNA, new abortion litmus test?

DNA paternity testing has become a popular technology in
Moscow, where it is used to determine whether to keep a

The sad, perilous lives of Afghan women

Few private doctors offer controversial RU-486
----------

Woman's rights activist witnesses Afghan violence
----------
"In early September, the [feminist] activist, Barbara Bick,
was in northern Afghanistan to observe women's progress
in the region controlled by anti-Taliban forces."

Questioning identity politics
----------
by Wendy Kaminer
As she often does, the iconoclastic liberal Kaminer

time it is "identity politics": "even if the collective

gay people could be discerned, the preferences of
particular individuals are unpredictable." (10/01)

A 17-year old high school student's drawing of Mommy
Liberty spread across the Internet in the wake of the
September 11 attacks on the U.S. Hopefully it will strengthen a
woman's right to own a gun in self-defense rather than
strengthening militarism. (09/26/01)

Pro-anorexia sites are part of PC backlash
----------
by Sekai Mutunhu
