Hello ifeminists:

Calling all aspiring columnists! It's time for The Charlotte
Observer's seventh annual Columnist Search for a writer to provide monthly
editorials. <http://www.charlotte.com/observer/opinion/0909colsearch.htm>
Thanks to Linda Rader for forwarding this heads-up. And, please, if any of
you are successful in applying for a column, let us know so that we can
feature your work on a monthly basis.

I have received a request for an ifeminist presence, as follows...."I
am a producer for counterSpin, a national debate show on CBC Newsworld. I am
looking for intelligent and informed participants in our studio audience for
our show tonight, Wednesday, October 3rd in downtown Toronto." The show will
be live, at the CBC building in Toronto at 25 John St. (corner Front) on
Wednesday, October 3rd. Audience members need to pre-register. If you are
able to contribute to the show by your presence, contact Leslie Stojsic,
Audience Producer, at (416) 646-5211.

I am still writing columns on war, not feminism, for FOX News (even
though the column runs under the title "the ifeminist") and I am posting
separate weekly pieces on the ifeminists.com site which address feminist
issues directly. I make the separation consciously because each member's
stand on the War is a matter of her or his own conscience and I do not
introduce it as a litmus test.

The wisest words I know..."If you want peace, work for justice."

      Now...onto the main event.

                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

==> News Reports <==

Rapist's parents to go on trial
----------
"The parents of a convicted rapist will go to trial on
charges that they helped keep their son's criminal past
   a secret." (09/24/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/493154351.html

Prisons push ban on nudie magazines
----------
"Hardcore pornography is already banned in state prisons.
Now corrections officials want to extend that ban to
almost any publication featuring nudity, including ...
magazines such as Playboy." Officals offer the typical
feminist argument that porn desensitizes men. Meanwhile
prisons are under attack for not stopping gay rape.
   (09/24/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/947271744.html

DNA, new abortion litmus test?
----------
DNA paternity testing has become a popular technology in
Moscow, where it is used to determine whether to keep a
child, who should retain custody, whether a Visa should
   be issues...among other questions. (10/01/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/480326170.html

The sad, perilous lives of Afghan women
----------
In Afghanistan, educated, once-professional women remain
sealed behind closed doors, stripped of their rights by
   the Taliban regime. (10/01/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/442846325.html

Few private doctors offer controversial RU-486
----------
"A survey by the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation
concludes only 6 percent of gynecologists have offered
RU-486 to patients." 40 percent of the doctors surveyed
did not offer the pill because they opposed abortion.
   (09/27/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/45849708.html

Woman's rights activist witnesses Afghan violence
----------
"In early September, the [feminist] activist, Barbara Bick,
was in northern Afghanistan to observe women's progress
in the region controlled by anti-Taliban forces."
Instead, she was in the area when an anti-Taliban leader
and (she claims) a man dedicated to women's rights were
   killed in an attack. (09/27/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/32118777.html

Seizing the cars of 'johns'
----------
Officials in a Michigan couty are readying a plan to seize
-- and possibly keep -- the vehicles of men arrested for
soliciting prostitutes. Officials call the plan for
civil forfeiture "innovative." It would also be
   lucrative. (09/24/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/158853483.html

Ovary implanted in arm? A joke?
----------
A former cancer patient has made medical history by having
a fully functioning ovary implanted in her arm. Or
   that's the report.

Anti-abortion escapee vows to kill
----------
"Clayton Lee Waagner vows to kill as many Americans as
possible connected with abortions -- doctors,
bookkeepers -- it makes no difference. The
self-described terrorist claims his mission is God's
   will." (09/28/01)

A different view of women under Taliban
----------

A more complex view of women under Taliban and their
   resistance to it. (09/27/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/955360304.html

Women, the Taliban's bravest opponents
----------
by Janelle Brown
An excellent account of the life of women under the Taliban

URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/83294346.html

Questioning identity politics
----------
by Wendy Kaminer
As she often does, the iconoclastic liberal Kaminer
provides insightful analysis of a social phenomenon. This
time it is "identity politics": "even if the collective
political preferences of racial minorities, women, or
gay people could be discerned, the preferences of
   particular individuals are unpredictable." (10/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/535452233.html

Men are stupid
----------
by Will Lee
An unexpected source argues that women are smarter than
men, based upon current educational stats. Researchers
such as Christina Hoff Sommers and Judith Kleinfeld have
argued persuasively that gender bias favoring women in
   education is responsible. (11/01)

Mommy liberty packs a gun
----------
by Eliza Gauger
A 17-year old high school student's drawing of Mommy
Liberty spread across the Internet in the wake of the
September 11 attacks on the U.S. Hopefully it will strengthen a
woman's right to own a gun in self-defense rather than
   strengthening militarism. (09/26/01)
URL: http://www.free-market.net/rd/243551284.html

Pro-anorexia sites are part of PC backlash
----------
by Sekai Mutunhu
Sites "promoting" anorexia are causing consternation among
feminists and experts who liken them to pornography.
What they seem to miss is that the sites are a rebellion
against the imposition of political correctness on
   women's bodies. (09/24/01)

Artist fights for women left out of the Torah
----------
by Michael Paulson
Helene Aylon -- raised in the Orthodox Jewish tradition,
which she loves -- is taking every page of the Torah,
and noting where women are excluded or slighted. Then,
she is turning her reactions into art. (09/21/01)

Strip City -- book review
----------
by Darcey Steinke, reviewer
In a complex, gritty, and insightful review of the novel
"Strip City" by Lila Burana, Steinke writes, "Women have
just as many motives for stripping as they do for
   becoming lawyers." (09/26/01)

Women likely to suffer most from war

Support Bill Maher
----------
November 30, 2001

made during a broadcast. Sign the petition to protest
the possibility and any comments you make will be sent
