Hello ifeminists:

I hope all of you are holding up under the tremendous pressure of the
last two weeks. Many of the issues that seemed important before September
11th, including individualist feminism, have faded into the background. As
well they should have. But part of reclaiming life back from the terrorists
is to resume the daily work of caring about the issues, large and small,
that shape our society. Freedom is in the details.

For a while I will be preparing two columns a week. The ifeminist
column on FOX News will not be on feminism for the foreseeable future but
will address the War. I will include a link to it in each InsiderUpdate.
This week... <http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,35029,00.html> A different
article, one that discusses a specifically feminist topic, will be posted on
the front page of ifeminists.com on Tuesday afternoons.

My continuing best to you and yours.

                                     -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

'Politically Incorrect' apologizes for political incorrectness
----------
Bill Maher, the irreverent host of late-night talk show
'Politically Incorrect,' apologized for saying some U.S.
military actions were 'cowardly.' The retraction came in
the wake of Sears and FedEx cancelling commercials.

Mexicans reverse law lowering penalties for 'provoked' rape
----------
Under tremendous pressure from feminist groups, lawmakers
in the border city of Juarez are reversing a law that
lowered sentences for rapes that were "provoked." Among
provocations that had been cited were how the woman
dressed and whether she smiled at the man. (09/19/01)

Chile high court defines contraception as abortion
----------
"Chile's Supreme Court has banned emergency contraception
in the Roman Catholic country, arguing that it actually
is a form of abortion. Abortions are illegal in Chile
even if necessary to save a mother's life or in cases of
   rape and incest." (09/22/01)

Federal judge blocks Ohio ban on late-term abortion procedure
----------
A federal judge blocked Ohio from enforcing its ban on a
particular type of late-term abortion procedure. The
judge ruled that the law is unconstitutional because it
bars doctors from performing the procedure in cases
where it may be safer for some patients. (09/21/01)

Few Texas hospitals offer morning-after pill to rape victims
----------
Most Texas hospitals do not provide the so-called
morning-after contraception pill in emergency rooms to
rape victims, according to a new study. The pills have
been available in the United States by prescription
   since 1998. (09/21/01)

Teenage sex costs a cow
----------
Swaziland's king has forbidden men from having sex with

Men are one phone call away from destruction
----------
by Dave Brown
Bill 117 is being fast-tracked and is likely to become law
in Ontario by November 7th. The Bill would transfer all
property in a one-on-one relationship (including dating)
to an abused woman so that she can "escape" her abuse.

Terror's first victims
----------
by Janelle Brown

Muslim, Asian women target of insults, harassment
----------
by Rekha Basu
A moving news account on the soaring abuse of
American-Muslim women and Asians who look Arab is
followed by a commentary on the new racism -- especially

Women less enthusiastic about war
----------
by Madeleine Bunting
According to a recent poll, "74% of men support air strikes

A studio of her own
----------
by Mary Meier
A new Boston exhibit, "A Studio of Her Own," shows how
early women artists struggled to learn anatomy in
hospitals, refused to wear veils while sketching nude
male models and scoffed at critics who said women could
   not accurately
   sculpt men's legs. (09/20/01)

Abortioncam is legally sound
----------
by Robyn E. Blumner
"As disheartening as [the web broadcast of abortion
providers entering and leaving clinics] is to supporters
of abortion rights, like myself, it is all perfectly
legal and protected by the First Amendment. And it
   should remain so."

----------
by staff
Humor. Investigative journalism has uncovered that divorced

   shocked." (09/19/01)

Feminist critiques of international relations
----------
by Adam Jones
A fascinating analysis and critique of how international
relationships have been gendered in the last decades.
Jones states, "Feminist attempts to incorporate a gender
variable...are constrained by the basic feminist
methodology and all feminists' normative commitments."

Woman held without charges, denied lawyer
----------
October 20, 2001
In Indonesia, Amelia Woisiri is being held by the police
who tortured her husband to death. Denied an attorney
and charged with no recognizable crime, she has been
told she will share his fate if she doesn't corroborate
his crimes. Bring your concern to the authorities'
   attention.

Helping victims of acid attacks
----------
According to Unicef, there has been a four-fold increase in
acid attacks on women in Bangladesh. Women who do not
wear a veil or otherwise conform to strict religious law
risk having acid thrown in their face. Protest this
   practice.

Stop gender apartheid in Afghanistan
----------
November 31, 2001
A campaign with various strategies to reveal the suffering

Game theory approach to the toilet seat problem
----------
At last...a mathematical solution. "Consider a bathroom
with one omnipurpose toilet (also known as a WC) which
is used for two toilet operations which we shall
designate as #1 and #2. The toilet has an attachment
which we shall refer to as the seat (but see remark 1
below) which may be in either of two positions which we
shall designate as up and down..."
