Hello ifeminists:

For those of you who tried to access our front page over the week-end
only to receive an "Oops" message ... it appears we were hacked!
Ifeminists.com is apparently having enough of an impact to be targeted for
attack. Our Fearless Leader restored the page on Monday but still doesn't
know what to do about the ransom note for "Moose and Squirrel."

*Not* as part of the foregoing joke -- it is time for me to make a
personal appeal for ifeminists to give a tax-deductible financial gift of
... well, of whatever amount seems reasonable to you in order to support
the InsiderUpdate and the site in general. Click here

I received the following note from Kathleen, "I am an avid reader of
the I-feminist newsletter and wanted to let you know about my new website."
It is RepublicanActivist.net amd it offers overviews of news and current
events from a Republican POV, many of which are of interest to ifeminists.=
=20

I also want to encourage everyone to check out a posting on the
Bulletin Board made by Sarah Baker who is a "regular" there, I'm pleased to
say.=20
0.html> The thread is entitled "For Fathers" and Sarah prefaces her posting
with the explanation, "My grandmother=92s grandmother wrote this to her
daughter (my
grandmother=92s mother) about their husband/father (my grandmother=92s
grandfather)." It is a moving tribute to the depth of love and devotion of
men toward their daughters. Thank you very much, Sarah ... I have reread it
several times.=20

Now ... onto the main event ...

NOW supports child-killer Andrea Yates
----------
In what may be described as a cynical attempt to grab
headlines, the National Organization for Women is
helping to raise money to defend Andrea Yates - the
mother accused of drowning her five children in the
   bathtub. (08/27/01)

British Columbia safe haven for US polygamists
----------

enforcement has decided the Code is not constitutional.
As a result, polygamist US families are seeking
   sanctuary in Canada. (08/27/01)

California says strippers can't be banned from touching themselves
----------
California's Alcoholic Beverage Control Appeals Board ruled
that it's unconstitutional for the state to tell topless
dancers they can't touch themselves. The ruling lets the
owners of topless bars breathe a little easier by
removing one excuse for shutting them down. (08/23/01)

Lebanon tortures arrested women
----------
Amnesty International has called on the Lebanese

Writer says change rape laws to protect men
----------
At the Edinburg Festival, actor-writer Steven Berkoff
called for a change in the law so men like him cannot be

woman who alleges she was raped, assaulted and racially
   abused by him. (08/23/01)

C.S. Lewis, HarperCollins, and the rape of Narnia
----------
by Eli Lehrer
Readers will soon be able to revisit the mythical creatures
and strange realms of C.S. Lewis=92s "The Chronicles of
Narnia." Publisher HarperCollins plans to issue a new
series, by contemporary authors, that will be set in
Lewis's fictional universe. But the new series would
probably be unrecognizable to Lewis and lack his
   mystical Christian infusion. (08/01)

Interview on Taliban's persecution of women
----------
by Saira Shah
British journalist Saira Shah risked her life entering
Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to document on film the
horrific treatment of women and girls, unimaginable
destitution, and the mass murder of ethnic minorities.
This is CNN's interview with her. (08/27/01)=20

Why NOW hates possible Rush/CNN deal
----------
by Lisa De Pasquale
"NOW=92s campaign against conservative radio hosts Dr. Laura
Schlessinger and Rush Limbaugh only amplifies their
mean-spirited and political agenda to silence alternate
views, undermine capitalism and freedom, and limit free
   speech." (08/28/01)
http://www.cblpolicyinstitute.org/freespeech.htm

A homeless mom
----------
by Michelle Kennedy
Homelessness is a real problem. With high taxes, barriers
to cottage industry, minimum wage and other barriers to
self-improvement through hard work, it is a problem that
will increase. Read the story of one homeless mom.

Tell girls they can reach for the sky
----------
by Gina Ryan
Engineering isn't the male bastion it once was. The Society
of Women Engineers donate their time and talent to serve
as role models at school career days; they sponsor and
take part in science fairs, judge "model city"
competitions, and foster programs like "Introduce a Girl
   to Engineering Day." (08/22/01)

That every man and woman be armed
----------
by Vin Suprynowic
One of the most outspoken US gun advocates confronts the
anti-gun culture in Canada. "The 'rape enablers' I like
to call them," Suprynowicz explains. "They call it gun
   control." (08/20/01)=20

Double standard for child-killers
----------
by Janet Albrechtsen
"When women kill their children, there is a reason. When
men kill their children, they are simply evil." The
hypocrisy has been highlighted by the case of Andrea
Yates -- a mother whose killing of her 5 children has
made her a cause celebre in some feminist circles.

Battle of the sexes
----------
by Cathy Young
Young speaks of the power and paradox of women's sports and
finds reason for optimism. "The encouraging news is that
millions of Americans of all ages and both sexes are now
watching the girls of summer without giving a thought to
   sexual politics." (08/17/01)

One woman's observations

by Kaitlin Duck Sherwood
"Duckie" starts with the observation, "Being a woman in
engineering industry is different from being a man in
engineering industry. Not better, not worse, but
different." She then launches into a fascinating
