Hello ifeminists:

It is a hot, hot August with the publishing world and universities --
indeed, everyone but mad dogs, Englishmen and one ifeminist editor -- on
vacation. Ifeminists.com is bustling these days with the Bulletin Board
<http://www.ifeminists.com/interaction/forum/feminism0108/index.html> being
a hotbed of debate on genetic theory and bioethics. The moderated email
list is up to 80 members and Kirsten will be joining the behind-the-scene
ranks as a co-moderator, giving the staunch Talisman a chance to breathe.
(Thanks Talisman! I would be out my depths without you.) And -- despite an
expected summer dip in activity -- hits to the site are markedly up.
Perhaps it has something to do with the new feature on our home page: news
and commentary that changes daily. <http://www.ifeminists.com/>

All of you have been a part of making this remarkable experiment in
community-building such a success. I am proud to be part of ifeminists.
Thank you.

On a sadder note, some of you may have heard already that the
libertarian and courtly SF writer Poul Anderson died peacefully last week
as the result of a long illness. (Details can be found by clicking here.)
3/MNL212244.DTL> Rest in peace, Poul, and thanks for the many evenings of
pleasure as we read your work.

I never know to segue after a sad note. So let me just say ...

      Now, onto the main event.

                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

94-year-old to pose nude for Penthouse
----------
The 94-year-old Brazilian actress Dercy Goncalves will be
   baring all in a stereotype-breaking lay-out for
Penthouse magazine. The photos will run along with an
article on how the elderly are mistreated and misused.

Risque ads upset French (of all people)
----------
Public debate over "porno-chic" advertisements, which
include sado-masochistic themes, has led to governmental
involvement. Speaking of the ads as humiliating and
degrading to women, a government study recommended
self-regulation in the industry and changes in the
   wording of French laws. (08/03/01)

Debate continues over Megan's Law
----------
Laws throughout the nation require convicted sex offenders
to register with authorities and allow authorities to
publicize where they live. Collectively Megan's Law
after a girl who was raped and killed by a convicted sex
offender, the laws are still controversial. Critics
observe that even murders are deemed to have paid their
"debt to society" after serving their terms. (08/06/01)

Pink pistols: group targets safety, defense
----------
"Gwen Patton remembers feeling helpless. At a vigil for
Christian Paige, a transsexual woman murdered in
Chicago, she recalls standing by, feeling very small, as
she often did at such events ... With her pistol and a
carry permit, Patton says she doesn't feel helpless
   anymore." (07/27/01)
http://www.epgn.com/StoryPages/NewsStories/PinkPistols.html

Private computer techs must report child porn to feds
----------
"Tucked into a new [SC] law on education standards for day
care workers is a requirement that private technicians tell
police if they find child pornography when servicing
computers." The measure also expands the requirement
that photo developers report to the police on film that
seems to have children under 18 in what seem to be
   sexual postures. (07/27/01)

Feminists divided over Condit
----------
Although the article's title indicates that feminists are
mixed in their reaction to Condit, the contents reveal
that feminists intend to stand behind this Democratic
   philanderer. (08/06/01)

Chinese county must conduct 20,000 abortions
----------
"A Chinese county has been ordered to conduct 20,000
abortions and sterilizations before the end of the year
after communist family planning chiefs found that the
official one-child policy was being routinely flouted."

Canadian mothers flee to the U.S.
----------
Over 100 mothers and children fled from Canada to the U.S.
because they are members of a religion that allows the
Church to discipline children by spanking. Fearful of
having their children removed, the mothers are
considering an asylum request. In Atlanta, the U.S.
removed children from religious homes for abiding by
   similar Church policy. (08/02/01)

Couple falsely accused of rape win huge judgment
----------
"Six years after a police child-sex-ring investigation
spread terror through the rural apple-picking community
of Wenatchee, Wash., those wrongly accused of holding
satanic rituals involving rape and molestation are finally
starting to see the money." The judgment awarded $3
   million. (08/04/01)

Pro-life truckers cause furor on freeways
----------
Convoys of trucks with billboards depicting aborted fetuses
are outraging pro-choice advocates in California who
claim they are traffic hazards. The pro-life truckers
argue that, if the aborted fetuses are too awful to
view, then abortion is too awful to do. (08/03/01)

Penn State uses urinals for 'politically correct' message
----------
The Office of Student Affairs at Penn State and Men
Stopping Rape have a new project: the distribution of
urinal splash guards with the slogan "You hold the power
to stop rape in your hands." No word on whether women
are being informed that they are "wiping the power to
   prevent unwanted pregnancies."(07/25/01)
http://news.excite.com/news/uw/010725/politics-104

Police in bed with prostitution ring
----------
Between 1997 and 1998, when Taipei authorities claimed to
be cracking down on the "illegal" sex industry, they
were apparently taking bribes and falsifying paperwork
   to let it thrive. (08/03/01)
http://www.taipeitimes.com/news/2001/08/03/story/0000096930

Damages awarded for aborted male fetus
----------
In the continuing complexity of India's attitude toward
aborting fetuses based on their predicted sex, a couple
has successfully sued a doctor whose tests determined a
fetus to be female. After aborting, the couple
discovered the tests were wrong. The case was heard in
   "consumer court." (08/03/01)

State agency with power to kidnap with impunity
----------
by Wendy McElroy
For Heidi and Neil Howard, giving birth to a terminally ill
baby seemed punishment enough. But that was before the
Massachusetts Department of Social Services stepped into
   their lives.
http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,30915,00.html

Title IX devastates male sports
----------
by Ann Coulter
Coulter writes, "Stephen Neal, a world champion wrestler,
was captain of the wrestling team at California State
University-Bakersfield when the school cut the team ...
There were just too many male athletes. Federal law made
CSU do it." One result: the US is no longer winning
medals in wrestling in the Olympics. (07/31/01)

NOW's the time to speak up
----------
by Kathleen Willey
Willey asks, "Today marks the 91st day since Chandra Levy
disappeared. Where are the women’s groups? Where is NOW
and others like it? Why won’t they speak up? What are
   they afraid of?" (07/31/01)

What Chandra Levy teaches us about Washington D.C.
----------
by Michelle Easton
The President of Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute has no
difficulty in condemning Gary Condit's behavior and
