Hello ifeminists:
The ifeminist of the month for August will be the indomitable Claire
Wolfe -- gun activist, survivalist, outlaw and cultural commentator. What a
woman. An avid advocate of privacy, Claire is currently building a log
cabin for herself in an undisclosed location. Claire is single-handledly
responsible for the epitaph I have chosen for myself: "I was born, I lived,
I died. Now mind your own business." Check out her writing in the link
listed below under Online Books and Collections.
The ifeminist editorial for this week, "Your Child is Worth Money to
the State," was suggested by material forwarded to me by Linda H. of
SheThinks, a spin-off site from Independent Women's Forum. Thanks Linda.
I hope everyone is enjoying (and has bookmarked) the new feature on
our front page. <http://www.ifeminists.com/> A selection of news items,
commentaries, events, and action items are being updated on a daily basis
so keep checking back.
Now ... onto the main event.

Professor sues over General Custer poster
----------
A Minnesota history professor, Jon Wiulland, is suing his
college for suspending him and quashing his First
Amendment rights after he put a George Custer poster on
his office door. The Center for Individual Rights is
taking on the case. (07/26/01)

UN police accused of trafficking women for sex
----------
Kathryn Bolkovac is an American policewoman who was hired
for a UN post aimed at cracking down on sexual abuse and

officers were involved in the trafficking, she was
fired. Bolkovac is suing. (07/29/01)

Pro-life senator endorses stem cell research
----------
Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee has come out in favor of
federally funding stem cell research despite being
pro-life. The issue is splitting the pro-life movement
and causing strange alliances. (07/19/01)
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/7/192001a.asp
Brothel exposed in Denmark
----------
Clean sheets and constant lookouts kept a middle-aged
brothel madam from the Aalborg area in business for
nearly a decade, until police recently shut the
operation down. Nobody was forced to work, there were no
illegal immigrants, and the conditions were good. Yet
the "madam" who ran the brothel will face a trial, with
possible imprisonment. (07/27/01)

Nashville woman fatally shoots intruder
----------
"A man is dead after police say he tried to sexually
assault a woman in her own home." (07/25/01)
http://www.wkrn.com/Global/story.asp?S=412650&nav=1ugB
Bandit queen slain by gunman
----------
Phoolan Devi, who went from abused child bride to become an
infamous outlaw and, then, a member of India's
Parliament, was shot dead. The police believe political
motives were behind her assassination. (07/26/01)

UN diplomats may be abusing household staff
----------
A new view of the UN ... "Behind locked doors and formal
facades of diplomatic missions, at least 4,000 household
workers on special visas are underpaid, overworked,
intimidated and sometimes physically abused. If they
leave their employers, they lose their visas."

Couple crusading for tough rape laws accused of raping girl
----------
Five years ago, John and Narda Goff were so outraged when
their daughter's rapist slipped through a loophole in
Ohio rape laws that they successfully fought to toughen
the laws. Now they are being accused of raping Narda
Goff's daughter and the closed loophole is being used
against them. (07/25/01)

Unlocking the potential of pink-collar workers
----------
by Wendy McElroy
Earning a living should not be a privilege granted by the
government: it is right. Government should abandon the
labor laws and regulations that block the ability of
people to get ahead through work and innovation.

Deadbeat social scientists wrong about divorced dads
----------
by Robert Locke
Locke reviews Dr. Stanford Braver's book "Divorced Dads:
Shattering the Myth," calling it "probably the most
important work of conservative social science in a
decade." It reveals the myths about divorced and
deadbeat dads that have become "facts" through
repetition. (07/02/01)

In praise of housewives
----------
by Wendy McElroy
"I hope," writes ifeminists.com editor Wendy McElroy, "that
feminism comes to understand that being a housewife is
an honorable option. For some women, it is fulfillment.
For others, it constitutes self-denial. In short,
domesticity is the same as any other choice women
confront —- right for some and wrong for others."

Women entrepreneurs sound off
----------
by Joelle Cowan
According to a recent survey of businesswomen in New York
City, "[m]ost female entrepreneurs support families,
almost all started their own businesses out of a desire
to be in charge, and many find obstacles in high taxes
and endless bureaucracy." (07/26/01)
http://www.pacificresearch.org/contrn/01-07-26.html
Million Moms compound their mathematical errors ...
----------
The misnamed "Million Mom March" -- all three of them --
have once again demonstrated their inability to count. A
spokesperson for MMM, holding forth at a UN victim
disarmament conference, offered numbers that suggested
more than half a million Americans die from firearms use
each year. The real number is about 6% of that figure.

Short on facts: The false argument over embryonic stem cell research
----------
by Michael Fumento
Fumento, now completing a book tentatively titled
"Evolution: How Biotechnology Is Changing Our World,"
offers a new slant on the whole controversy, reminding
us that not only has the issue of federal funding for
this research been off the table since 1996, the
research itself is also speeding on quite nicely ...
with neither the public funding nor embryonic cells.

What is life?
----------
by Ellen Goodman
Goodman comments, "Suddenly, politicians who call
themselves 'prolife' are fighting over who deserves to
wear that uniform." The issue dividing pro-lifers is,
again, embryonic stem cell research. A key component is
the question "What is Life?" and differing answers
proffered. (07/08/01)

Costly daycare and TV violence: how can we protect our kids?
----------
by Peter Orvetti
"How can libertarians answer those who ask, 'If not for the
government, what about our children?' It's one of the
toughest questions we face, and one of the most easily
exploitable by our opponents." Orvetti addresses various
"what about the children?" questions. (01/00)
