Hello ifeminists:

Breaking news! The ifeminists front page <http://www.ifeminists.com/>
will now be updated on a daily basis with relevant news stories,
commentaries, events and action alerts that keep you up-to-date. As you
cruise the Internet, keep me in mind and beam over items you think might be
of interest. And while you are at it ... bookmark the front page as a place
to visit and stay informed. Thanks Louis, thanks Chris!

I am pleased to welcome a new online ezine of cultural commentary
onto the scene: Ama Gi <http://www.amagi.net/>. Its mission: "Ama Gi is the
first known written representation of the word 'freedom.' Found in the
Sumerian city of Lagash in 2300 B.C., the Ama Gi marked the first time
humans sought to share freedom with others through the written word.
AmaGi.net seeks to continue that tradition." Happily, the first issue
contains an overview of ifeminism.

      The ifeminists Bulletin Board
<http://www.ifeminists.com/interaction/forum/feminism0107b/index.html>
keeps brimming over with vigorous discussion -- so much so that Tooch (J.D.
Tuccille) is archiving about three times a month at this point. Although
harsh words arise on occasion, compared to every other BB I know of in
feminism, the ifeminist one is a model of civilized discourse. The NOW BB
seems particularly contentious, being "presided" over by a figure that the
Independent Women's Forum calls "Jabba the Hut." The regular posters at NOW
are so eager to stop some people from posting (hi, David!) that they
recently began a thread, saw the name of an unwanted poster, then proceeded
to spam their own topic out of existence. 8-)

     Now...onto the main event...

Mastectomies for healthy women, new medical recommendation
----------
A new study recommends removing the breasts of healthy
women who carry a certain gene as a preventative measure
against breast cancer. And people wonder why feminists
are suspicious of the medical establishment. (07/19/01)

Two protestors arrested outside abortion clinic
----------
Operation Save America, a pro-life activist organization,
has been sponsoring demonstrations outside a Wichita
abortion clinic since a judged ruled that they had a
right to protest. Two demonstrators have been arrested
after a shoving incident in the increasingly tense
   atmosphere. (07/16/01)
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010718/us/abortion_protests_6.html

The Department of Social Services kidnaps children
----------
The DSS receives over $100 million/year from the federal
government in bonuses for children they take from
parents and adopt to others. None of that money goes to
the general state treasury. It all goes directly to DSS.
Read one story of a child kidnapped from its parents.

Afghanistan bans the Internet
----------
In an effort to censor the obscene and enforce Islamic
values, the Taliban has banned use of the Internet in
Afghanistan. Among those who will have no legal access
   are foreign aid agencies. (07/13/01)

Connecticut strip searches 13-year-old girl for truancy
----------
Two young girls who were forcibly strip searched at a
Connecticut juvenile center are bringing a lawsuit
against the state authorities. One girl was "guilty" of
truancy: the other had run away from home. (07/21/01)

Mississippi forces woman to stay married to accused criminal
----------
Alice Susan King was awarded a divorce from her husband in
2000, partially because he was arrested for trying to
hire a hit man to murder three people. Now, the
Mississippi Court of Appeals says that none of King's
reasons is good enough under state law to end the
   marriage. (07/19/01)

Condoms may not prevent spread of disease
----------
"A federal report released Friday concludes that there is
"insufficient evidence" that condoms prevent the spread
of most sexually transmitted diseases, providing fresh
ammunition for advocates of 'abstinence-only' sex
   education programs." (07/21/01)

IWF campus sex and dating study to be released
----------
July 26, 2001
Thursday, July 26, at 11:30 a.m. at the Columbus Room at
Union Station, Washington, D.C., a new study on campus
sex habits will be released by SheThinks.org. MTV
relationship expert Dr. Drew Pinsky will meet with and
address Congressional interns to whom the topic of sex
   is, presumably, of special interest.

Unlocking the potential of pink-collar workers
----------
by Wendy McElroy
Earning a living should not be a privilege granted by the
government: it is right. Government should abandon the
labor laws and regulations that block the ability of
people to get ahead through work and innovation.
   (07/23/01)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,30307,00.html

Sex and the census
----------
by Cathy Young
Young analyzes the latest data from the census. For
example, People living alone now outnumber married
couples with children and the increase is not due to widowed
seniors living longer. Young people are marrying later or
not at all. What does this mean?(07/20/01)
http://reason.com/0108/co.cy.sex.html

The dark side of Sanger's legacy
----------
by Julianne Malveaux
Margaret Sanger's contributions to birth control are
diminished to her sympathies with eugenics that led her
to advocate limiting the fertility of those who were
   mentally or physically defective. (07/18/01)
http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/618

When a guard points a gun in a child's face ...
----------
by Nicki Fellenzer
Fellenzer tells the compelling story of when, as a child,
she realized that guns are empowerment against the State
and the symbol of being a free (wo)man. (07/20/01)

Million Moms morph into Billion Moms for assault on gun rights
----------
by Wendy McElroy
The Million Mom March, an organization dedicated to
suppressing the right to bear arms, essentially
collapsed amidst recriminations and financial shenigans
in the U.S. But it's found new life as the Billion Mom
March, lobbying the U.N. to disarm civilians. (07/17/01)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,29718,00.html

Domestic violence is not a gender issue
----------
by Donna LaFramboise
LaFramboise points out the obvious: the murder of children
by their mothers (the Yates and other recent cases) is
domestic violence. Why is it not being identified as
such? Because the law and the media view DV as men
battering women. The violence women do receives little
   recognition. (07/18/01)

Where is the feminist outrage over Chandra?
----------
by L. Brent Bozell III
Bozell ponder's NOW's lack of concern over Chandra Levy's
disappearance. Although PC feminists howled over the
alleged transgressions of Republicans like Clarence
Thomas and Senator Bob Packwood, they remain silent when
the perpetrator is Democrat Gary Condit. Is their
attitude related to their silence on former president
Clinton's sexual harassment of women? (07/17/01)
http://www.mrc.org/columns/newscol/col20010717.html

Pro-ana sites -- unPC pro-anorexia sites cause gasps
----------
Perhaps in reaction to PC feminism's hugely exaggerated
claims about anorexia/bulimia, an only pro-anorexia
(pro-ana) movement is growing. The PC outrage is
interesting ... especially in how it skirts freedom of
speech. This site is a backlash against the backlash.

Women are as violent as men
----------
by Ilana Mercer
"Nowhere are the myths about female pacifism more robust
than in spousal violence orthodoxy. There are hundreds
of sociological surveys conducted with mathematical
randomness that attest to the fact that women assault
their partners as often as, or more often than, men do."
