Of the latter, here is a sampling: * From Louise Lacey: "I would suggest that many of the men are not of any interest to the women (very hard opinions, loudly suggested, repeatedly), so they don't go to Libertarian events. That is my reason, and the reason that many other women who are libertarian or anarchist don't go." * From Jeff Rooney: "Chris Whitten once wrote, jokingly, that libertarian men are mostly INTJ personality types (if you're familiar with the Myers-Briggs type indicator), but I think he's got a point. INTJs (of which I am one) are in love with ideas but not generally inclined to be sensitive to the concerns of others." Good news ... Michael Allen's one-act play, "A Promising Future," is available in a cheap, yet well-made edition. Michael (editor of SpinTech) writes "This play concerns Dr. Maggie Tillotson as she tries to reconcile mind and body, among other things, at an academic conference from hell. It is 20 pages long." mrallen@spintechmag.com Sad news ... Mark Penman -- libertarian, gun rights activist and contributor to The Libertarian Enterprise -- took his own life on July 2nd. <http://www.webleyweb.com/tle/libe130-20010716-01.html> But, after pausing to shake your head in dismay, the fight must continue. So ... onto the main event ... -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com ==> News Reports <== Deadbeat dad ordered not to have any more kids ---------- Wisconsin's Supreme Court, splitting along gender lines, ruled that a man who owes $25,000 in child support can be ordered not to father any more children while he's on probation. Male justices supported the ban, while the women dissented. (07/12/01) http://www.courttv.com/people/2001/0711/father_ap.html Man prosecuted for fantasies in his diary ---------- "First Amendment experts are alarmed by the case of an Ohio man who got 10 years in prison for child pornography for scribbling made-up tales in his private journal about molesting children." (07/17/01) http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010713/us/obscene_journal_1.html Insurer sued for non-coverage of birth control ---------- In what will be a precedent-setting case, the ACLU and the Washington National Abortion Rights Action League has filed a class suit against Regence Blueshield, the state's largest insurer, that accuses the insurer of discriminating against women by excluding prescription contraceptives. (07/12/01) http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010712/us/contraceptive_lawsuit_1.html Feds to regulate fertilization procedure ---------- The FDA has long claimed the legal right to regulate fertility procedures but this is the first time that government oversight is necessary for doctor's to administer a course of treatment. Medical procedures generally fall outside FDA authority but now doctors have to fill out aN Investigational New Drug Application to render this treatment to patients. (07/11/01) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A43947-2001Jul10.html Woman in blue jeans causes uproar ---------- Ever wonder how to shut down government? A female camera operator for a television station shut down a session of the Moroccan parliament by wearing bluejeans. If only it were that easy. (07/12/01) http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010712/od/islamists_dc_1.html Hawaii raises age of sexual consent to 16 ---------- "The Legislature raised Hawaii's age of sexual consent from 14 to 16, overriding a governor's veto for the first time since Hawaii became a state." The Governor accused them of being "politically correct." (07/12/01) http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010712/us/hawaii_consensual_sex_1.html Battered husbands are coming forward ---------- "A 1998 Justice Department study - the most recent on the subject - found that men account for 36 percent of all victims of domestic violence." Advocates for men's rights insist that the number is still drastically understated. (07/09/01) http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/34396.htm For more News Reports see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/news/ ==> Commentary, Opinion, and Book Reviews <== Call it THEN, not NOW ---------- by Lisa De Pasquale A scathing critique of NOW from the programming director of Claire Boothe Luce Institute. She writes, "NOW claims to speak for all women, yet NOW's priorities are astoundingly inconsistent with those of most women." (07/15/01) http://www.cblpolicyinstitute.org/callitthen.htm Billion Mom March ---------- by Wendy McElroy "Where does a rights-hating organization go when it has collapsed in disgrace in its own country? If it's the Million Mom March, dedicated to destroying the right to bear arms, it goes to the United Nations. It goes global and becomes the Billion Mom March." (07/17/01) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,29718,00.html Harry Potter: tool of patriarchy ---------- by Christine Stolba According to researchers at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, the Harry Potter books deserve scorn for ptomoting negative stereotypes of women. Stolba comments, "today’s gender wardens care less about fostering a love of reading in children than they do in inculcating 'correct' thinking." (07/16/01) http://www.iwf.org/news/010716.shtml When does personhood start? ---------- by Linda Rader "Can a fetus have rights? When do rights begin for a person? Deciding that impacts not just on abortion but criminal law. What is at stake is the foundation of our concept of rights." Ifeminist Linda Rader explores these themes. (07/15/01) http://homepages.about.com/libfemmes/libfemmes/ Confessions of a faux feminist ---------- by Jane Haddam A wonderful and entertaining "rant" by a woman who believes in old fashioned feminism -- that is, equality between the sexes under just law and respect for women based upon their achievements. Good fun. http://www.tartcity.com/fauxfeminist.html Saying 'no' to feminist stereotypes ---------- by Wendy McElroy "Today, politically correct feminism creates a stereotype that denigrates the housewife or, more accurately, portrays her as a paradigm of how men politically oppress women." (07/10/01) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,29161,00.html For more Commentary, Opinion, and Book Reviews see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/commentary/ ==> Action Opportunities <== Petition against paternity fraud ---------- October 15, 2001 The petition begins, "We the people, recognize the injustice of PATERNITY FRAUD against men and their families as extortion, involuntary servitude and peonage against their constitutional right to enjoy their own assets, property and pursuit of happiness." http://www.petition.paternityfraud.com/ For more Action Opportunities see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/actions/ ==> Online Resource Directories <== Taking Children Seriously ---------- "TCS is an educational philosophy. Its most distinctive feature is the idea that it is possible and desirable to bring up children entirely without doing things to them against their will, or making them do things against their will, and that they are entitled to the same rights, respect and control over their lives as adults." Introduction, FAQ, and info on subscribing to the paper journal. sl@tcs.ac http://www.tcs.ac/ For more Online Resource Directories see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/homepages/ ==> Events <== Anne Coulter, live online chat ---------- July 19, 2001 Live chat at 8 p.m. EDT, Thursday, July 19. Anne Coulter is an attorney with the Center for Individual Rights and author of "High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton." http://www.townhall.com/chat/ For more Events see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/events/ ==> Introductions and FAQs <== Academic sanity on sexual harassment, at last! ---------- Like a breath of fresh air, this report finds many university anti-harassment policies to be "misguided." For example, the compulsory sensitivity training programs "often operate to humiliate those" with "incorrect views. They also frequently suggest that being white, male, or heterosexual constitutes a presumption of guilt." http://www.nas.org/statements/harass.htm For more Introductions and FAQs see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/brief/ ==> Scholarly and In-Depth Studies <== Psychiatry fails women ---------- by Amy Benfer In the 19th century, doctors treated mentally distressed women by various methods, from vibrator-induced orgasms to clitoridectomies. Three decades ago, many women who are currently prescribed stimulants would have been taking sedatives. Is psychiatry really helping women? Or leading to situations like the murdering mom, Andrea Yates. http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2001/07/11/levine/index.html Do battered women have a right to bear arms? ---------- by Sayoko Blodgett-Ford A scholarly argument for the right (and need) of battered women to own guns. It goes beyond the Second Amendment to argue for gun rights based on the Fourteenth Amendment and the provisions in many state constitutions. http://www.2ndlawlib.org/journals/fordbatt.html For more Scholarly and In-Depth Studies see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/in-depth/ ==> Institutes, Organizations, and Clubs <== Widows of war, living memorial ---------- Women act as a force for world peace through this non profit organization and web site at which they record and share their stories of losing loved ones through armed conflicts. http://www.warwidows.org/ Armed Females of America ---------- Hardcore women's gun-rights groups. Articles, links, safety tips, e-mail discussion list. armedfemales@keepandbeararms.com https://www.keepandbeararms.com/afa/ For more Institutes, Organizations, and Clubs see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/organizations/ ==> Games, Surveys, and Tools <== Standards for evaluating gender bias in studies ---------- IWF offers common sense principles on how to conduct and evaluate gender studies for bias. For example, "Keep studies based on confidential data private. If a study contains information considered too confidential to disclose, the conclusions should likewise be withheld. The public should not be asked to accept conclusions that it is denied the means to evaluate." http://www.iwf.org/news/010307.shtml For more Games, Surveys, and Tools see: http://www.ifeminists.com/information/directorybycategory/games/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- If you appreciate ifeminists.com, please help support it.
