Hello ifeminists:
Although the URL is not in the ifeminist newsletter, I encourage
everyone to check out ifeminist Claire Wolfe's new column at Backwoods Home
Magazine <http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/wolfe70.html>. Welcome
back from your hiatus from the spotlight, Claire! Don't leave us again.
Another ifeminist has been actively publishing. Tracy Quan, the
leading light in PONY (Prostitutes of New York), has an excerpt of her
upcoming book in this week's Salon. Warning for those of modest bent! It is
sexually explicit.
<http://www.salon.com/sex/feature/2001/07/09/tracy_1/index.html>
Ifeminists.com is having an impact! Not merely as a weekly column
featured on FOX News, but also as a trend setter in how to name a site. The
founder of iGreens <http://www.igreens.org.uk> -- a free-market
environmental group -- tells me that he chose the name because of our *our*
site. Wow.
Now...onto the main event...

Why aren't more women part of the libertarian movement?
----------

Rethinking Betty Friedan
----------
by Daniel Horowitz
The full title of Horowitz's fascinating critique is
"Rethinking Betty Friedan and The Feminine Mystique:
Labor Union Radicalism and Feminism in Cold War
America." It delves into the extreme left roots that
Friedan has carefully denied.

The new mythology of rape
----------
by Wendy McElroy
Although feminism initially demystified rape and offered
realistic perspectives/services to abused women, it now
creates its own myths around the issue. For example, the
myth that all men are rapists or benefit from the rape
culture.

Judge orders Idaho to keep paying for abortions
----------
In an emergency order issued Monday, a state judge required
Idaho to keep paying for abortions that doctors say poor
women need to protect their health. The decision came in
response to a new law banning taxpayer-financed
abortions. (07/03/01)

Separate but equal?
----------
"Women's groups who boycotted nationwide government
consultations on changes to divorce law because they
refused to sit at the same table as men could get the
female-only hearing they have demanded." (07/05/01)

Dutch brothels get legalized, regulated
----------
Brothels in Holland, where prostitution itself has long
been legal, just gained the status of legal workplaces
immune to raids for simply carrying out their business,
but along with the new status has come a plague of
inspectors and tax collectors. (07/09/01)

Cambodian sex shop raided a day after opening
----------
Cambodian police raided the country's only sex shop a day
after it opened in Phnom Penh and confiscated dozens of

society. "This is very dangerous -- look how large those
rubber penises are," police Chief Yim Symany said.

NOW blasts Rush for lying then gets facts wrong
----------
Kim Gandy, the newly elected NOW President, slammed talk
radio star Rush Limbaugh, saying he makes up much of
what he
broadcasts. But then she flatly misstated a key detail
about Juanita Broaddrick's rape allegation against Bill
Clinton -- allegations with which NOW must be fully
acquainted. (07/08/01)

Stopping rape with breakfast
----------
Germans are invited to "fight rape" by buying their morning
broetchen (roll) from bakeries that use paper bags
printed with information regarding violence against
women. (07/01)
http://www.winmagazine.org/issues/issue45/win45c.htm
Public insurance to cover fetuses?
----------
In what NOW calls a "transparent effort ... to undermine
birth control and abortion," the Bush administration is
seeking to craft a controversial policy that would
enable states to define fetuses as persons eligible for
coverage under a public health insurance program for
children. (07/06/01)

Egyptian feminist told to divorce for speaking out
----------
As you read this, Nawal El-Saadawi is being tried as a
heretic against Islam, partly because she wishes to
remove inheritance restrictions for women. The
prosecuting attorney is demanding that she divorce her
husband to whom she has been long and happily married.

Americans terrorized by 'tolerance,' some say
----------
With an advertisement placed in the New York Times, Rabbi
Daniel Lapin has sparked a national debate over whether
tolerance has morphed from respect for those with whom
you disagree to a mandatory acceptance of all beliefs
and acts. (07/05/01)

Woman sues over posting abortion details
----------
An Illinois woman went to a clinic for a private abortion
but the details were published on the Internet after she
had to be hospitalized. The hospital is being sued for
"negligently and inadvertently" releasing her records to
anti-abortion activists. It may be a precedent-setting
case. (07/04/01)

Murder: a new feminist view of motherhood
----------
by Wendy McElroy
The shocking crime of Andrea Pia Yates, the Houston woman
who drowned her five children, has galvanized many
mainstream feminists to make apologies for women who
slaughter their own offspring, painting the criminals as
victims. (07/03/01)

The meta-Monica mythology
----------
by Elaine Showalter
A new book "Our Monica, Ourselves" -- a take-off on the
feminist classic "Our Bodies, Ourselves" -- is a
collection of essays that claims to re-evaluate American
society by reference to a politician's sex scandal. Most
Americans would define themselves differently.

The Nanny Culture
----------
Say NO! to the Nanny Culture. "What's a 'Nanny'? ... a
humorless bunch" with "an uncanny understanding of the
regulatory and legislative process (which they use
effectively to curtail your rights)." They can often be
seen on the news or quoted in newspapers. "They suffer
from 'selective outrage.' They also frown a lot."
