Hello ifeminists:

I am delighted to point you in the direction of "Brain Drain" -- a
free online short story by the SF rising star, Fran Van Cleave ... who also
subscribes to the InsiderUpdate.
<http://www.doingfreedom.com/gen/0601/fa.braindrain.html> You go girl!

Vera Fallon of the Gender Issues Research Center wants ifeminists to
know that her site <http://www.gendercenter.org> has been updated.
Personally, I have Vera's page bookmarked and visit it about once a month
because she is so diligent about expanding her content.

The latest editorial, "Murder: A New Feminist View of Motherhood," is
posted on the ifeminist homepage and also available through FOX News at the
URL listed below. Nothing has appalled me as much in recent memory as the
reaction of the media and feminists to the cold-blooded murder of her five
children by Andrea Yates. This, on the heels of what seems to be
confirmation that the abortion ship was a PR stunt. (Check out the National
Review's take.)
<http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/comment-wills062601.shtml> I am
waiting to hear from the other side, from Women on Waves, before coming to
a final conclusion on what appears to be an ill-advised hoax.

      Now...onto the main event!

                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

Million Mom March to merge
----------
The Brady Campaign, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun
Violence, and the Million Mom March are officially
merging on Oct. 1. The Million Mom March will be known
as the "Million Mom March, United with the Brady
Campaign and the Brady Center." Or MMMUWTBCATBC. It
   trips off the tongue.

South Carolina tests the bounds of a fetus's rights
----------
Brenda Kay Peppers was arrested for child abuse two years
ago after giving birth to a stillborn baby with cocaine
in its bloodstream. Now, the case is beginning to play
out as a definitive struggle to determine what, if any,
   rights the unborn have. (06/28/01)

Surgeon General pushes better sex ed, tolerance
----------
Surgeon General David Satcher yesterday urged parents and
teachers to provide children with a thorough sex
education that promotes abstinence but also permits
distribution of contraception in schools. He also asserted that
homosexuality is not a reversible lifestyle choice and
that committed, "mutually monogamous" relationships are
an acceptable alternative to marriage. (06/29/01)

Bloc Quebecois committee urges legal sex trade
----------
A committee of the nationalist Bloc Quebecois political
party in Canada wants street prostitution decriminalized
and red-light districts set up for prostitutes. It
recommends a five-year trial period for legalization,
after which the experiment would be evaluated.

Does the Virginia Military Institute encourage abortions?
----------
"Pregnant Virginia Military Institute cadets would have to
quit school or face expulsion under a policy VMI is
developing in the wake of its first pregnant cadet. One
critic said the policy would be unconstitutional,
discriminatory and might even encourage abortion."

http://www.roanoke.com/roatimes/news/story114112.html

Reversible male contraception
----------
"Health Canada has given approval for the first human

Feminist calls for new Anita Hill hearing
----------
Former NOW President Eleanor Smeal, who criticized Juanita

charges that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas read
pornography and talked dirty to her. (06/29/01)

Islamic husbands can divorce wives by phone message
----------

can say "I divorce you" three times with the assistance
   of technology. (06/27/01)

Anti-abortion terrorist is stalking clinics
----------
"Self-avowed antiabortion terrorist Clayton Waagner is a
fugitive, but by posting a pledge to kill abortion
providers, he may have given the feds just what they
   need to catch him." (06/27/01)
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2001/06/27/waagner/index.html

Louisiana's abortion liability law lands in court
----------
Louisiana's unique law letting women sue a doctor up to 10
years after an abortion for alleged damage to themselves
or to the aborted fetus will be argued in state court.
The measure has been blocked from taking effect since
   passage in 1997. (07/02/01)

Gays and lesbians persecuted worldwide
----------
"Persecution based on sexual orientation is grounds for
U.S. political asylum, but most gay people don't know
it. And a new human rights report documents abuse and
torture of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender
   people worldwide." (06/28/01)

The UN gay threat to the First Amendment?
----------
by Mary Jo Anderson
"Homosexual activism is advancing on a number of fronts at
the United Nations these days, including a call by one
group to prohibit the media from publishing
"discriminatory" content -– which critics are calling an
outright attack on the First Amendment right to a free
   press." (06/28/01)

A new feminist view of motherhood
----------
by Wendy McElroy
Andrea Pia Yates —- the Houston woman who drowned her
five children -— has prompted stunned and public
discussion of how a mother could possibly kill her own offspring.
It has also inspired a particularly vicious new feminist
line of reasoning: murder as a natural part of
   motherhood. (07/03/01)

Moms defend baby killing
----------
by Mark Steyn
In rushing to defend Andrea Yates, the mother who killed
   her five children, moms/psychobabblers/feminists are
normalizing infanticide by treating it in a
compassionate manner that trivializes the brutal,
   methodical deaths of innocents. (06/30/01)

Bashing Boys
----------
by Wendy McElroy
Behind the attacks on boyhood: sketchy science and extreme
politics. We now know a 1997 study — instrumental in
embedding PC feminist politics into children's education
   — for what it truly was and is: a farce. (06/28/01)

Don't make fun of feminists!
----------
by Gail Jarvis
In a story of PC sensibilities run amok, feminists are
arguing with female House pages over their choice of
clothing and trying to track down the culprit who wrote
   a satirical memo. (06/27/01)

----------
by Bernd A. Laska
A biographical sketch of individualist Dora Marsden
(1882-1960), the editor of some avant-garde literary
journals (1911-1919; Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot,
D.H.Lawrence, James Joyce made their debuts in these) as
well as an author with philosophical ambitions. She is
being rediscovered of late, sometimes as "The Stirner of
   Feminism."

Protest K-mart's anti-gun stance
----------
Tell K-Mart what you think of their new policy. A 10-minute
FREE phone call could make the difference. Just dial
1-800-247-0200 (press 1 after being connected) and
politely ask for clarification on their "no ammunition"
policy. Follow up with a statement that you've been a
K-Mart customer, but will no longer be one unless the
   policy is immediately changed.
