Hello ifeminists:

An interesting question has arisen. For some time now,
I've been aware of a site called Battered Woman
<http://www.batteredwoman.com/> that openly advocates beating
women (much as the Wife Beaters site does. Ifeminists.com has
the honor of being listed on its "enemy" page. Another feminist
group has asked us to join in a petition drive against the site.
<http://www.petitiononline.com/bw2001/petition.html/> I have
great reservations but -- after stating them -- I'll leave it
to everyone of you to decide. 1) the site seems to be a parody,
2) freedom of speech is freedom of speech, 3) why give it the
publicity it obviously seeks? Having said this, there is no harm
in writing (through a petition) to the site owner to register
your protest since the petition does not call for censorship.
Use your own judgment.

This just in ... On June 18, 2001, Women.com Networks, Inc.
was acquired by iVillage Inc. making Women.com a wholly owned
subsidiary of iVillage. This also makes it the largest online
community of women. As the scramble to survive the dotcom shake-out
continues, women's sites are moving in what I think is the the
wrong direction: big (seemingly for the sake of bigness).
Ifeminists.com continues to grow, and at a fair clip, but we
intend to keep a "small town" feel to our community. We want to
focus on the political niche that defines us, listen to what
readers have to say, and encourage personal contacts through
the BB and e-mail list.

Last week I announced an article on the retirement of
Patricia Ireland from NOW but that piece will be postponed
by request from another site. Instead, I have posted an excerpt
from "Sexual Correctness," which recently came out in paperback.
The essay is entitled "The New Mythology of Rape."

Now ... onto the main event.

                             Cheers,
                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

----------

Blind man arrested for hearing child porn
----------
The case of a blind man being charged with hearing porn
raises interesting questions: "Are all senses banned
from experiencing child porn? If it were bottled, could
he smell it? What if he heard something that perfectly
resembled child pornography, but was in fact generated
   by a computer?" (06/26/01)

Crude jokes cause gender war at Dartmouth
----------
by Kathleen Reeder
Digging through the trash of a frat house, feminist
students discovered the shredded remains of a single-page,
   intra-fraternity newsletter called the 'Zetemouth.'
Because of its crude remarks, the frat in question has
been under attack ... literally. (06/24/01)
