Hello ifeminists:
I must begin with an apology to Chuck Eimermann for bumping his guest
editorial entitled "Abortion Conflict" from last week to our current issue.
<http://www.ifeminists.com> Since last week, I have learned how to work
with .pdf files so Chuck is up and running. (Yes! She *can* be taught!) My
weekly editorial entitled "Bashing Boys" is also posted.
Chuck's editorial is all the more appropriate since breaking news
seems to indicate that the much-touted "abortion ship" is a PR scam. If
this is true, I can only throw up my hands in disgust at the short-sighted
grab for headlines. Even as a pro-choice advocate, in the future I will
listen with open skepticism to every word out of the mouths of women I
formerly considered reliable. If true, Women on Waves and their associates
were not only lying to the media but also to everyone of good will who
supported them.
Pat's deserting a sinking ship. Patricia Ireland is resigning from
NOW. Next week's ifeminists.com editorial will give a glimpse into the
probable reasons behind her rather abrupt departure. Meanwhile, you can
read the official, sanitized account at NOW's website <http://www.now.org>
Thanks to Maria Dolan for a particularly provocative response to
David Horowitz's article on how gay politics has allegedly spread AIDS.
Highlights from her correspondence: "I'm one of those unreconstructed
Queer leftie sex radicals from the 70s." Maria wanted ifeminists to know
that "there was a movement for Queer liberation before there was AIDS. It
involved our full enfranchisement as people ... When people started getting
sick, the old stigmas were reinforced, and new phobias and hysterias took
root." A younger generation may not remember, as Maria and I do, how some
extreme politicians back then were seriously suggesting the rounding up and
forced isolation of those who were HIV positive. Thanks for writing, Maria,
and for being honest enough to see some essential truth in Horowitz'
disturbing claims. We at ifeminists live for this sort of correspondence.
Now ... onto the main event.
