    Hello ifeminists:

If you want a bit of fun ... I have posted, in Italian, an excerpt from
my booklet on prostitution which will be published in Europe soon.
<http://www.zetetics.com/mac/articles/capitolo2.html> There is a link to a
translation site called Babelfish. Translating the excerpt into English is
hilarious. I particularly like "women on the street" being translated into
"road girls." Unfortunately, however, Babelfish doesn't seem to like Netscape.

The latest ifeminist editorial is entitled "Homelessness and
Prostitution" and, like several of its predecessors, has been picked up by
FOX News.
<http://www.ifeminists.com/introduction/editorials/2001/0515.html> Many
thanks! Thanks are due as well to David L. and David K. for their
continually feeding me great news items for the InsiderUpdate.

This from the ifeminist Bulletin Board: the satirical Flame Warrior
site. <http://www.winternet.com/~mikelr/flame1.html> It is an antidote for
all of you who have been flamed or disillusioned on a BB.

In the wake of the pro-gun rights rallies of Mother's Day, consider
protesting the following. Bank of America has decided not to provide
merchant services to any firearm-related business.
<http://www.sierratimes.com/archive/files/may/11/geddc051101.htm> Remember
that Citibank rescinded a similar policy in the face of nationwide threats
from customers to close accounts.

     Now, onto the main event...

Gun control rallies draw little support
----------
A year ago, the Million mom March organization dominated
news coverage with a large rally for gun restrictions in
D.C. This year, the organization is in financial trouble
and its Mother's Day rallies drew tepid attendance.

Mothers divided on gun control
----------
Million Mom March rallies attended by women who want to
pile even more legal restrictions on people who own
firearms were countered on Mother's Day by Second
Amendment Sisters rallies where the right to bear arms
   was supported. (05/14/01)

Labor government wants privileges for women candidates
----------
In another step toward iembedding a double standard into
laws and public policy, "A new Labour government would
change the law to allow political parties to
discriminate in favour of women when choosing election
   candidates." (05/06/01)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk_politics/newsid_1315000/1315814.stm

Porn industry cultivates California legislators
----------
Under the banner of the Free Speech Coalition, nearly two
   dozen adult entertainment professionals lobbied
California legislators in a day-long blitz intended to
convince officials of the industry's legitimacy and key
role in the state economy. (05/09/01)
http://www.latimes.com:80/news/state/20010509/t000039107.html

Recording industry self-censors
----------
Following a "scathing report by the Federal Trade
Commission" in April that condemned the record producers
for marketing "violent and lewd songs to children," the
   industbefore the politicians do. (05/04/01)
http://news.excite.com:80/news/r/010504/19/leisure-music-taskforce

Arkansas fetuses are people
----------
In what may become a trend in the wake of Just weeks the
House of Representatives' vote to recognize fetuses as
people under federal law, "the Arkansas Supreme Court
has ruled that a fetus that died during a botched
delivery qualifies as 'a person' under that state's
   wrongful death law." (05/11/01)

Women gaining in 'male' professions
----------
"Women are entering male-dominated fields at increasing
rates and for those who are, the payoff is big -- those
women now earn the same or more than their male
counterparts, according to a new analysis released today
from the Employment Policy Foundation." (04/03/01)

Crime pays, prosecutors profit from prostitution
----------
"Forty assistant prosecutors in Wayne County, Michigan are
expected to receive a combined $500,000 in raises paid
for by fines on vehicles seized this year, mainly in
prostitution stings." Could there possibly be a
financial incentive behind the State's confiscations?

Arizona repeals archaic sex laws
----------
One hundred years after such acts were criminalized in
Arizona, it's finally legal for unmarried couples to
live together, and for people to engage in sex that is
not intended to conceive children. (05/10/01)

First Utah polygamy trial in years
----------
Tom Green is going on trial on felony bigamy charges
stemming from having five wives. If Green is found
guilty, then polygamy will be pushed further into the
shadows. If found innocent, then polygamists across Utah
are expected to launch court challenges to bring the
practice out of the closet. (05/14/01)

The harm of porn?
----------
by Avedon Carol
"In spite of a long-standing anti-censorship tradition in
the women's liberation movement -- and indeed, a specific
hostility toward sexual censorship -- the view has become
widely accepted by the media and therefore the public
that feminists uniformly accept that pornography should be
banned." This article is the antidote.
http://www.fiawol.demon.co.uk/FAC/harm.htm

Making sense of the men's movement
----------
by Cathy Young
Ifeminist Cathy Young proceeds from the premise that "the
interest in men's issues is a much-needed corrective to
the increasingly obsessive tendency to focus on real or
fictitious disadvantages affecting females and ignore
those affecting males." She provides a fair analysis of
   the growing Men's Movement.

Men also victims of domestic violence
----------
A classic study (1994) by the American Medical Association
that revealed such insights as, "The high rate of
female-to-male homicide is not only unique to intimate
relationships, it is also somewhat unique to the United
   States."
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/article/2036-2559.html

Men don't matter
----------
"A new study finds the ex parte order is a woman's best
weapon prior to divorce. Ex parte means that the party
affected is given no notice of the court proceeding, and
no opportunity to defend himself." (04/16/01)

Moms want dads for Mother's Day
----------
by Alex Cukan
According to a Heritage Foundation study, 72% of women want
to raise children in a two-parent home even though they
have a better-than-even chance of becoming a single
parent. The apparent change in attitude has far-reaching
political implications for policies such as "dead-beat
   dads." (05/12/01)
http://www.vny.com/cf/News/upidetail.cfm?QID=185190

Nickel and Dimed -- book review
----------
by Laura Miller, reviewer
"Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in Boom-Time
America" chronicles the two-year experiences of
left-feminist Barabra Ehrenreich in working minimum-wage
jobs. The factual report is fascinating. Her
recommendations are not. Employers are blamed rather
than laws that hinder financial independence, e.g. laws
   against cottage industry. (05/09/01)
http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2001/05/09/poor/index.html

Porn stars demand 'harder' sex
----------
Warning! Humor! "The sexual frustration of many porn
stars," said noted porn expert Bob Guccione Sr., "is
further complicated by..." Only the adventurous or those
fed up with censorship should read further. (05/01)

Against PC, for disobedience
----------
by Charleton Heston
   Charlton Heston's anti-PC speech (1999) at Harvard,
"Winning the Cultural War," in which he urges, "When an
8-year-old boy pecks a girl’s cheek on the playground
and gets hauled into court for sexual harassment ...
march on that school and block its doorways."
http://www.law.harvard.edu/studorgs/forum/heston.html

When will Million Moms stop lying?
----------
by David Lampo
Lampo, publications director of Cato Institute, asks, "When
will these Million Moms stop lying about kids and guns?"
Now that Bush is in office and the media is no longer
uniformly besotted with liberal/PC gun views, how long
can the lies about gun ownership continue? (05/11/01)

Analyzing the grief after abortion
----------
by Margaret Sykes
The grief some women feel after an abortion is being used
by "pro-life" advocates. This four-part article explains
why there's no need to invent new "syndromes" to
describe the phenomenon. Some pregnancies are so
desperately mistimed or part of generally unpleasant
circumstances that any outcome will lead to grief.

Latinas create unique domestic violence strategy
----------
by Mariel Garza
The current approach to domestic violence is to remove the
women (always assumed to be the victims) from the men.
Latinas are declaring that they want to end the violence
but not the relationship with their partners. They want
to work with the men to improve the situation.

Protest abuse of homosexuals in Mexico
----------
"Arbitrary arrest; bribes; physical, psychological and
   sexual abuse; inhuman conditions of detention;
deprivation of property, at the hands of police officers
are a daily occurrence for gay men, lesbians and
transvestites in Monterrey." Express your protest by

Conservative Chicks
----------
"A grassroots political action organization dedicated to
furthering causes important to Conservative Women."
Although they are too conservative on civil liberties,
CChicks is a welcomed balance to radical feminist sites.
