    Hello ifeminists:

My hat is off to Independent Women's Forum for the ad (see URL below)
they have run in various student newspapers listing the Ten Most Common
Feminist Myths. The PC backlash has included a protest rally at UCLA and
brouhaha in The Daily Bruin, that campus' rag. Today's Bruin
<http://dailybruin.ucla.edu/db/articles.asp?ID=15571> contains the latest
from IWF. For context, see the She Thinks site in the ifeminist database.
Just go to the information section of our site and do a search under key
words. For my take on the flap, see this week's column on FOX News, "The
Mother of All Myths" <http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,25337,00.html>
which is also posted on the front page of ifeminists.com.

Heads up! Baen Books, one of the best SF publishers in the field, is
now giving away free books to anyone who wishes to download them. Remember
you heard it here first. <http://www.baen.com/library/>

The big news of the week is that ifeminists is starting a moderated
e-mail list. (How to join will be posted in time for the next
InsiderUpdate.) The co-moderators and I look forward to censori ... uhm,
meeting all of you. Meanwhile the Bulletin Board rollicks on as a bastion
of free expression. This overheard on the "From the Shallow End of the Gene
Pool" thread: "The damn central controllers are at it again. The American
Association for the Advancement of Science wants fertility clinics
regulated because work at these clinics is leading to permanent change in
the gene pool. And that could affect future generations in a direction not
under society, i.e., government control." Don't be shy. Join the discussion.

      Now...onto the main event.

Right to bear arms still prevails, says law professor
----------
Americans still enjoy the right to bear arms "so citizens
can deter tyranny," Prof. Glenn Reynolds, a University
of Tennessee law professor, told gun advocates at a
Mother's Day rally on the steps of the Tennessee state
   Capitol. (05/15/01)

   slaves. (05/15/01)
http://www.salon.com/sex/wire/2001/05/16/russia/index.html

Raped women may face 'sex life' scrutiny
----------
Under new guidelines from the House of Lords, "rape
complainants can be asked about previous sexual
relations with an alleged rapist if to exclude such
questioning would endanger the fairness of the trial."

Drug user convicted in fetal death case
----------
A South Carolina woman who used crack cocaine has been
sentenced to twelve years in prison for the death of her
unborn child, who was stillborn at 35 weeks into the
pregnancy. According to an advocate for the defendant,
"The verdict marks the first time a woman in the United
States has been found guilty of homicide for taking
   drugs during pregnancy." (05/16/01)
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2001-05-16-fetus.htm

'Ditch the Bitch' divorce ads from lawyers
----------
Hoping for a slice of the upscale divorce business, a
London law firm has released a campaign featuring a
poster of a packed designer suitcase with the caption,
"Ditch the Bitch." Another ad declares "All men are
Bastards." The ads have raised the oxymoronic issue of
   attorneys' ethics. (05/18/01)

Polygamy not protected by Constitution
----------
A judge has ruled that Tom Green's polygamous marriage is
not protected by the First Amendment. Green's was the

Petition seeks to abolish Columbia sexual misconduct policy
----------
The trustees of Columbia University were presented with a

Gender effects pilot's error
----------
A Johns Hopkins study has shown that "air crashes involving
female pilots are mostly due to mishandling of the
plane, while those with male pilots are more often due to
   flawed decision-making and inattention." (05/20/01)

More women become gun enthusiasts
----------
The ranks of women shooting and actively supporting the

Free speech, except on abortion
----------
by Ian Hunter
A 60-year-old grandmother has spent most of the last seven
years in jail because she stands "on a street in Toronto
and prays within a 60-foot radius of the Morgentaler
abortion clinic." Do the restraining orders on pro-life
activists constitute a violation of free speech?

.html

A modest defense of polygamy
----------
by Richard Mouw
Mouw states, "Though I think polygamy is sinful, living in
a pluralistic society demands we tolerate some practices
we believe to be wrong." (05/20/01)

Not quite a million moms
----------
by David Kopel
The "Million" Mom March rally in Washington, D.C. drew only
about 100 people -- and that was about par for similar
demonstrations across the country. The organization
behind the rallies is fading, but new authoritarian
groups are stepping in to fill its place. (05/16/01)
http://www.nationalreview.com/kopel/kopel051501.shtml

Helping homeless teens help themselves
----------
by Wendy McElroy
By most accounts, there are some 200,000 teenagers sleeping
on the streets in America every night. Government
programs won't solve the problem, but removing the legal
barriers to work so those kids have a chance to support
   themselves might. (05/15/01)

Ten most common feminist myths
----------
This advertisement from the Independent Women's Forum

The polygamy menace
----------
by Chris Colin
Warning! Humor! "Why do these wife-hoarders want to destroy
our way of life?" Colin has put together a list of
sinners who should be executed before they can destroy
   American society. (05/17/01)
