Page of the Week Picks
Ordinarily, we choose one page a week to honor as being new and noteworthy for people who value freedom. But as a part of our Fourth of July Features, we wanted to draw your attention to four of the best sites related to America's founding. We think these are all worth a special look!
This is a terrific online exhibit courtesy of the Library of Congress.
The page features a timetable of events, images of the documents as they were rewritten and edited, and a discussion of the furious debate over the inclusion and exclusion of certain portions of the Declaration. Step back in time by reading about the agony Jefferson suffered with each revision of his carefully-drafted prose!
An excellent resource which lets you learn about early America "through the media of its day."
This site features images of early American documents, a gallery of portraits, plain access to some of the period's most famous writings, and the Early America Review, "A journal of fact and opinion on the people, issues and events of 18th-century America." A fascinating look into the lives of everyday men and women struggling to defeat tyranny.
The home page for this small non-profit organization offers a wealth of information about the American founding's historical and intellectual roots.
Of particular note is the featured essay, Seven Principles of Liberty by John David Gowdy. This essay discusses how the founders perceived liberty and what they -- as interpreted by Gowdy -- believed was necessary to maintain it. Gowdy emphasizes virtue, faith, and national unity. You may not agree with all of its conclusions or implications, but it's worthwhile reading nonetheless.
If you thought the last selection was a little bit on the conservative side, then you may enjoy this pick.
The site is based around the book "America's Real Religion" by Gene Garman. It features chapters from the book plus supplementary essays documenting the separation of church and state. Garman argues that whether the founders were religious or not, almost all of them vigorously supported keeping religion and government apart.
The Freedom Home Page of the Week was created by Thomas Knapp, has been edited by Bryan Caplan, and is now edited by Kevin O'Reilly. E-mail if you have any comments or would like to recommend a site. Due to the volume of suggested sites, we may not be able to offer individual comments on each one, but please send your URL.
