Hello ifeminists:

A happy, healthy, and prosperous 2002 to all ifeminists!

2002 brings the good news that political correctness is in disarrayed
decline. The cash-starved Ms Magazine is moving to Los Angeles to link up
with the Feminist Majority; the news service Women's eNews -- formerly a
part of NOW's legal and education fund -- has gone independent and is
appealing for donations; NOW's Bulletin Board is still down in the wake of
legal threats for its call to harass a family whose home address and phone
number it published; radical feminist groups have sunk so low that they are
trying to scoop up federal money earmarked for disaster relief.

Meanwhile, ifeminists.com is not only hanging tough, we are also
making inroads into the mainstream. In the Spring, Rowman & Littlefield will
be issuing an ifeminist anthology (edited by me) with Camille Paglia, Wendy
Kaminer, Richard Epstein, Cathy Young -- a dazzling range of contributors.
A new popular feminist quiz has lifted questions directly from our own and
we're hearing back from a batch of new folks who have discovered they are
"ifeminists." FOX News still boasts a weekly "ifeminists" column. The first
ifeminist book in Italian just appeared on the subject of prostitution from
the publisher Leonard Facco. And a few weeks ago, I received a note from a
grad student who had visited my personal home page and wanted to know if I
was an ifeminist. No wonder the Ms Bulletin Board is spending so much time
attacking us: the PCs there know a credible threat when they see one. (Tho'
where they get that we are transsexuals, I don't know.)

So ... buckle up. 2002 is going to be a wild and fun ride. Visit our
new ifeminist store <http://www.cafepress.com/ifeminists> to buy T-Shirts
etc. that tell the world where you stand. Enjoy our Bulletin Board,
including an announcement of a discussion of Sommers' "Who Stole Feminism"
at MANN.

.html> Send the weekly editorials out to your mailing lists and forward the
InsiderUpdate to anyone you think would be interested. Everything you do to
help the site is appreciated.

Let us know what you think and where you want us to go. Come to the
jointly-sponsored (ifeminists/MANN) chat room this Sunday at 9:00 p.m. EST
and share your thoughts. It is free, it is easy, and I'll be waiting to say
"hi" at the cyber-door. The topic is "Prostitution" to mark the publication
of my book on that subject in Italian, but feel free to put in your
two-cents on where the site should be heading.

Now ... onto the main event.

                             -- Wendy McElroy, mac@ifeminists.com

==> News Reports <==

Child rape epidemic in South Africa
----------
WorldNetDaily
Fueled by widespread belief that sex with a virgin cures
AIDS, AIDS-ridden South Africa is experiencing an
epidemic of child rape. Over 15 percent of all reported
rapes are now against children under 11, and another 26
   percent against children 12-17. (12/26/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/808741007.html

Planned Parenthood may lose state funds
----------
Detroit Free Press
The choice, as passed by the House, is this: Planned
Parenthood can drop abortion from its repertoire of
options and services, or it can forego about $1.8
million in state family planning grants -- none of which
is used for abortion services. (12/28/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/164957529.html

The burqa outlasts the Taliban
----------
Associated Press
The burqa became the symbol of the Taliban's oppression of
Afghan women but the all-concealing garment's long
preceded the rule of the Taliban and it appears to be
surviving its defeat. The reason: women choose it.

Abortion-breast cancer settlement sets precedent
----------
WorldNetDaily
"In what is likely the first such settlement in history,
a woman in Australia has settled with an abortion doctor
she had sued because he failed to inform her of the
research linking abortion with breast cancer."

Courts says sexual harassment can occur outside work
----------
Toronto Star
A Canadian court has upheld the firing of a boss for sexual
harassment based on his conduct outside of work. The
reasoning: his conduct was associated with work because
   of the employee-employer relationship. (12/29/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/143561552.html

Semi-trained staff remove children from homes
----------
The Age
In Australia, 1000 child abuse cases have been put on hold
while staff with only a few weeks' training are sent out
to investigate the most serious child abuse reports and
decide whether to remove children from their parents'
   custody. (12/29/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/164198736.html

Strippers' charity embarrasses church
----------
St. Petersburg News
Strippers flashed their breasts for donations of toys which
they then contributed to a church drive for children.
The church is meeting with a representative of the
strippers to decide whether to accept "a truckload of
   toys." (12/22/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/916095306.html

NOW chases New York recovery money
----------

Male coach wins gender discrimination case
----------
Boston Globe
A Superior Court has found that Jim Babyak, the Smith
College basketball and soccer coach, was fired so that a

   been awarded $1.65 million. (12/20/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/421520652.html

Undercover cops party at strip club
----------
Daily Herald
Five undercover officers looking for illegal activity spent
nearly $700 at an Illinois nightclub, most of it on
beer, shots and lap dances. Then, after downing a
collective 40 drinks, they drove off in a city vehicle.
Some are questioning the propriety of this use of tax
   dollars and police authority. (12/22/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/415572753.html

UN quashes internal sex scandal
----------
Washington Post
The United Nations halted an investigation into whether its
police officers were enslaving eastern European women
into Bosnian brothels. Several officers had already been
   dismissed for sexual misconduct. (12/27/01)

First woman's magazine in Afghanistan
----------
INQ7.net
In Afghanistan, the first magazine for women in nearly 10
years has hit the shelves. "Seerat" (Attitude) does not
look like a standard glossy magazine. Crudely churned
out on an old fashioned press, its cover features a
picture of a woman being pulled along by a rope. (12/27/01)
http://www.free-market.net/rd/787287758.html

The feminist west and schizophrenia
----------
Reason
by Cathy Young
Young gleans a gender message from the recent attacks on the
US, "However much we would like to regard women’s
liberation as a natural right, it is the product and achievement of
a complex, advanced civilization.... Feminists, perhaps

   worth defending." (01/02)

Booed for free speech stand
----------
The Weekend Australian
by Phillip Adams
Adams writes, "I can still hear the boos and hisses that
greeted my keynote address at a conference on

passing of laws against racial vilification." He argued that

Throwing out the burqa with the bathwater
----------
Jewish World Review
by Jennifer M. Paquette
An Orthodox Jewish woman examines issues of freedom,
