----- Featured Action of the Week -----

Second Week of May, 2002
And now for someone completely different ...

Dear Freedom Activists,

This is my last column for Freedom Action of the Week. No, the feature
isn't ending, and I'm not leaving Free-Market.Net -- but I *am* passing
this particular pen to a successor and taking on some other duties. I'll
introduce that successor below, but first I'd like to say my goodbyes and
offer up one last opportunity for your consideration.

Freedom Action of the Week is nearly two years old now. When I think of the
column as "my baby," I have to say that I'm pleased to see it walking,
talking and growing and that I look forward to watching it mature into
exuberant adolescence and effective adulthood.

We've come a long way in just under two years, from a standing start to
what may be the most dedicated circle of "do-it-yourselfers" in the
libertarian movement. I took a peek at the list roster just a moment ago,
and see that we have 892 email subscribers. Our web stats show nearly 350
visits to last week's column. More than 1200 activists, doing real work for
freedom, one opportunity at a time.

I'm feeling rather pleased with myself -- but more, I am awed, inspired and
humbled by the fact that 1200 freedom-loving individuals take the time each
week to seek out an opportunity and act on it to promote liberty.

This week's action may be as simple as any I've ever offered: forward this
email (or click on the "mail this" button above or below the web version)
to ten friends and ask them to join us. Freedom Action of the Week is about
to take its next step and I'd like nothing better than for my successor's
first column to reach 10,000 readers.

And now, about that successor.

Most of you know, or have heard of, Mary Lou Seymour. Mary Lou is something
of a legend among libertarian activists. She operates the Liberty Activists
site and list and, with Claire Wolfe, created The Gulch, an activist manual
that's a continuing, web-posted "work in progress."

Wherever I've gone in the libertarian movement, I've found Mary Lou, always
doing *something* and inciting others to do something, too. Not very long
ago, I had the unbelievable luck to corner her and get her to come to work
as an editor here at Free-Market.Net. Her work has already been of
inestimable worth, but from the start, I had it in the back of my mind that
Freedom Action of the Week was a custom-built vehicle for her work and thay
my role had been to get the car washed and detailed so she could take it
out for a *real* road trip.

Now I'm handing her the keys. Fasten your seatbelts. If I know Mary Lou,
we're about to go from 55 mph to NASCAR speed.

>From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to thank all of you for hanging with
Freedom Action of the Week, whether you were here at the start or joined us
along the way. I already look back on this column as one of the most
productive and enjoyable projects I've ever undertaken, but more
importantly I look forward to joining you -- and Mary Lou -- as a reader
and activist working to make it bigger, better and more rewarding in the
future.

Regards,
Tom Knapp
