----- Featured Action of the Week -----
Second Week of November, 2001
25 Shopping Days 'Til Bill of Rights Day
I'm finding it hard to be a positive influence in these times.
I really am. There's not a lot to be cheerful about this
holiday season. America and the world are in economic recession.
The World Trade Center towers may have fallen, but the shadow
of the attack that brought them down looms large over our every
activity.
Even those among us who support the Bush administration's "war
on terrorism" don't do so with relish, and even those among us
who believe that "security" trumps some civil liberties aren't
comfortable with the idea.
Looks like a blue Christmas.
This year more than ever, an overlooked holiday deserves to be
revived and celebrated. On December 15, 1791, the first ten
amendments to the Constitution of the United States -- the
Bill of Rights -- went into effect, and that date has been
celebrated ever since as Bill of Rights Day.
If the American revolution was the knife edge of liberty,
the Bill of Rights is liberty's shield. Not just in the United
States -- its recognition that government must never violate
the precious rights of its citizens has been an inspiration
to lovers of freedom around the world for more than two centuries.
The Bill of Rights is something worth celebrating, and it's
something worth redeeming and defending. In future Action of
the Week columns, you're going to see an emphasis on the
concept of "Bill of Rights Enforcement," leading up to Bill
of Rights Day itself and beyond.
And the first step is ... a party. You can't have a holiday
without a party, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms
Ownership has some suggestions for making it a good one.
Check out the link below.
Lay on some red, white and blue crepe paper. Make a list
of your friends and send them an invitation. Kick up the heels
a little bit -- buy a couple of cases of Sam Adams, pop
"The Patriot" or "1776" into the VCR or DVD player and make
sure you keep the kleenex handy.
Don't forget the food! Sometimes I think the real purpose
of the revolution was to get away from English cuisine.
Boiled beef -- yech. Let's go with pizza instead. That'll
show them. Out of beer? Not to worry. You remembered some
champagne to toast Lafayette and the other French heroes
of liberty, right?
I'll have some party favors and more productive post-party
activities to offer you soon, but it's time to start planning
your Bill of Rights Day activity now.
