------------------------------------------------------------------------- IN THIS SHORT BULLETIN: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLIFFHANGER: Max Clifford, health, Nobel economists, costly state schools YOOF: December schools conference, new staff, Palace man drops in SKINNY DIPPING: Computer multimedia from ASI POWER TALKS: Michael Howard, Damian Green, Commons chairmen and more BUT FIRST: I spoke last week to our high-level training course on transparency and accountability in government. We had corruption-busters from many countries, so to make recent British government pronouncements a bit more transparent to them, I offered some translations: "We had very frank discussions..." means "It was a total punch-up" "We will issue a statement shortly..." means "We've no idea what to do" More below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HAPPENINGS: A busy coming week at ASI ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLIFFHANGER: Publicist MAX CLIFFORD spins in to the Adam Smith Institute for a Power Lunch this Tuesday, 1 October. We'll be talking about politics, spin, and the ethical issues around media intrusion. For information and invitations, contact steve@adamsmith.org or call 020 7222 4995. HEALTH CONFERENCE: Just time to make a last-minute booking for the Westminster conference on the future of UK healthcare that we are sponsoring (Thursday 26 September). Among the speakers are PROFESSOR PAUL CORRIGAN, VIRGINIA BOTTOMLEY, JOHN BACON and PENNY DASH. That's the topic at our Labour Conference fringe meeting on Wednesday 2 October. Speakers include SION SIMON MP, MIKE STONE (Patients Association), MATTHEW YOUNG (ASI) and JOHN HUTTON MP (Minister of State, Department of Health). PELICANS: Starting at the end of next week is the Mont Pelerin Society, an international gathering of free-market academics and activists founded by Profs Hayek and Friedman in the 1940s, and still going strong. NEXT GENERATION GROUP: We've moved the monthly meeting of our under-30s movers and shakers to Tuesday 8 October to enable a few of the Mont Pelerin Society's Nobel laureates to drop in. By invitation only (even if you're a Nobel laureate). For details contact tng@adamsmith.org . STATE SCHOOLS COST MORE: Saturday 5 October marks the formal publication of our report by ex-Fabian director Stephen Pollard, 'Customers not Bureaucrats' (that's who he says should be running public services). The report includes some sensational analysis which shows that state schools are, in fact, more expensive than private ones, so it should cause quite a stir. You can sneak-preview it on http://www.adamsmith.org or get a summary on http://www.adamsmith.org/cissues/customers-not-bureaucrats.htm . 57 VARIETIES: We counted up the Adam Smith Institute events on our forward diary the other day and it came to 57! You can find a full list of them online at http://www.adamsmith.org/policy/news/forward.htm . ------------------------------------------------------------------------- YOOF: our annual sixth-form conference ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ISOS: Our annual winter conference on economics and politics takes place again in Westminster Central Hall, on Thursday 12 December.
