AGE: Before and after the savings reports
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTERWORDS: Institute has held briefing breakfasts with the authors of the
government's reports on pensions simplification and long-term savings, ALAN
PICKERING and RON SANDLER. You can read a report of the Pickering discussion
at http://www.adamsmith.org/cissues/pickering-briefing.htm and of the
Sandler meeting at http://www.adamsmith.org/cissues/sandler-briefing.htm .
We have also prepared a useful summary of the Sandler report at
http://www.adamsmith.org/cissues/sandler-summary.htm .

FOREWORDS: Many of the key proposals of the Sandler report are actually
anticipated in an Adam Smith report two years ago by SIMON READ, called
Competition or Regulation. It suggested simpler products, regulating the
products not the sales process, low charges and much else. You can read the
report at http://www.adamsmith.org.uk/policy/publications/cat-all.htm .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW REPORTS: Health and freedom
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

GETTING BACK YOUR HEALTH: People in good health should be able to get part
of their taxes back and take the money to a private health insurer or
company health plan, according to actuary and City University professor
PHILIP BOOTH in a new report for ASI. This would give patients better
choice, driving down costs and driving up customer-focus and standards. Find
the report on our front page, http://www.adamsmith.org .

TAKING LIBERTIES: Four fundamental pillars of freedom, jury trial, Double
Jeopardy, Presumption of Innocence, and Habeas Corpus, are threatened by an
unprecedented alliance between populism (to sound tough on crime) and
modernizing zeal. The net result will be to make the British people more
vulnerable than ever to arbitrary action by the State. That's the thrust of
a new ASI paper by former cabinet minister PETER LILLEY. You can read the
report at http://www.adamsmith.org.uk/policy/publications/cat-all.htm .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
LIGHTBULB:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
A: None. If the lightbulb needed changing, the market would have done it
already.
