IN THIS BULLETIN:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCHOOLS: Time to expel the state?
HEALTH: Understanding the value of medicines...and paying for health
MEDIA: Dubs, Elstein, and Edmonds on the Bill
SAVINGS: ASI breakfast with Ron Sandler

BUT FIRST:

At the end of this month, on 31 July, the Nobel Economist and pioneer of
monetarism Milton Friedman will turn 90. There's a [very unlikely] story of
the student who fell asleep in one of his classes. As the snoring grew
louder, Friedman went over and tapped the guy firmly on the shoulder. "I'm
sorry, Professor, I missed the question," said the student, waking up with a
start. "But the answer is the Quantity Theory of Money."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCHOOLS: In a pretty poor state?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

REPORT: Chris Woodhead, former Chief Inspector of Schools, stirs up yet more
controversy with a new report for ASI, "The Standards of Today", which we're
publishing on Friday 5 July. He gives the evidence for his firm belief that
exams are getting easier, and that responsibility for them should be taken
out of the hands of the present quangos. And while we're at it, the National
Curriculum should be scrapped. Download the report soon from the front page
of www.adamsmith.org .

11 JULY LECTURE: Chris Woodhead develops these ideas (and more) at his Adam
Smith Lecture in Westminster at 6pm on Thursday 11 July. It's likely to be
an electrifying event as he roasts the educational establishment. For
information and invitations, contact events@adamsmith.org.uk, sign up online
at www.adamsmith.org or telephone the Institute on 020 7222 4995.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
HEALTH: Dr Smith's prescriptions
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

MEDICINES: The Adam Smith Institute is embarking on a new health policy
project called "Understanding the Value of Medicines". Today's NHS is too
based around surgery and hospital care: new medicines can produce better
health outcomes at much lower cost for taxpayers and much less stress for
patients. But we need to replace today's heavily regulated market with a
real market, replacing the NHS monopsony with real patient choice. For
information, contact projects@adamsmith.org.uk or telephone the project
director Matthew Young on 020 7738 4454.

FINANCE: Why not give people their money back and let them decide what
healthcare services to buy? That's the radical proposal from City U
Professor and actuary Philip Booth. He shows how such a system would benefit
both those who chose to take it and those who stayed in the NHS, how the
rebate would be calculated, and how to phase it in. We're publishing his
report in mid-July, so look out for it on www.adamsmith.org.uk soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MEDIA: Have they sent us the right Bill?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

OPINION-LEADER EVENTS: Three prominent media experts are coming to ASI to
chew over our famous sandwiches and the government's proposals for ownership
and regulation of media and communications. The first of these Power Lunches
is with SC Chair LORD (ALF) DUBS on Wednesday 10 July (note the new date).
Then it's ex-Channel 5 boss DAVID ELSTEIN on 24 July. And on September 24
it's the turn of DAVID EDMONDS, DG of OFTEL. For information and invitations
contact events@adamsmith.org.uk or call Will on 020 7222 4995.

POWERING ON: We have plenty of other Power Lunches coming up on non-media
subject too. Check these out:
17 Jul Richard Bowker - Chair, Strategic Rail Authority
26 Jul Mark Skousen - Head of the Foundation for Economic Education
31 Jul Gaynor McCown - VP of Edison Schools in the US
28 Aug Mark MacGregor - Chief Executive, Conservative Central Office
05 Sep David Arculus - Chair, Better Regulation Task Force
17 Sep Anthony Hilton - Economics Editor, Evening Standard
There's more, but I guess that's enough for now. For information and
invitations contact events@adamsmith.org.uk or call Will on 020 7222 4995.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
LONG-TERM SAVINGS: Reviewing the review
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

RON SANDLER, author of the government's report into the future of the
long-term savings market, takes an early (very early) chance to review his
review with us on 19 July at a special ASI briefing breakfast in the House
of Commons. For information, contact events@adamsmith.org.uk or telephone
Matthew Young on 020 7222 4995.
