WESTMINSTER EVENTS: Letwin, Woodhead, Sexton, Lambert, Sandler

BUT FIRST: How many Marxists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
(Answer below)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
DATES WORTH CELEBRATING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

SMITH BIRTHDAY: In Britain, June 3 and 4 are public holidays to mark the
Queen's Golden Jubilee. For us, though, June 3 is always worth celebrating
because that is the day when Adam Smith was born in 1723. You'll find all
sorts of fascinating facts about the pioneer of economics on the section of
our website dedicated to him: http://www.adamsmith.org.uk/smith/index.htm

TAX FREEDOM DAY: June 5 is another good day to celebrate, because that is
the point of the year when we've worked enough to pay off all our taxes and
can at last say we're working for ourselves. So send your chums a 'Happy Tax
Freedom Day' e-card from http://www.taxfreedomday.co.uk/happy-tfd.htm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
COLLEGE BOOKSHOP QUEST
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Adam Smith Institute is conducting an international survey of college
bookshops to scrutinize the political balance which students are getting. We
expect we'll find hardly anything by Friedman and Hayek, and shelf upon
shelf groaning under Marx and Engels. Do students read that garbage for fun?
Or is that what their tutors are telling them to read? If you're a student
and you'd like to help in the survey, email steve@adamsmith.org.uk

SOCIETY, SCHOOLS, AND SAVINGS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

LETWIN ON INCLUSION: Shadow Home Secretary and rising star Oliver Letwin MP
gives the Adam Smith Lecture, about the Tories' changing attitudes to social
policy, in Westminster on Tuesday 2 July. The hard-copy invitations have
just gone out to the folk who're not e-literate like you, so beat them for a
place and sign up at http://www.adamsmith.org/events/letwin-2002-07-02.htm

WOODHEAD ON STANDARDS: Controversial education expert Chris Woodhead is also
giving an ASI lecture, on 11 Jul, on standards, the curriculum, and choice.
You can sign up at http://www.adamsmith.org/events/woodhead-2002-07-11.htm

EDUCATION IN THE COMMONS: On the afternoon of 10 June, we have a special
seminar in the House of Commons to explore two new ASI reports on education,
by Chris Lambert (on the front page of http://www.adamsmith.org.uk now) and
Stuart Sexton (which will be up next week, just before it is published). And
we've more papers on education reform in the pipeline. For information and
invites (sorry, places are limited), email steve@adamsmith.org.uk

RON SANDLER: The author of the major report on retail financial products
explains his findings to friends of the Adam Smith Institute at a special
Westminster dinner in June. For information contact events@adamsmith.org.uk

LIGHTBULB
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANSWER: None. The bulb contains the seeds of its own revolution.

speakers for our Westminster Power Lunches. They include Sir Richard Sykes

(July 10) Richard Bowker (July 17), David Elstein (July 24), David Arculus

AND THE LAST WORD GOES TO...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ADAM SMITH, from The Wealth of Nations, Book V, Chapter I, Part II:
"In every profession, the exertion of the greater part of those who exercise
it, is always in proportion to the necessity they are under of making that
exertion."
-- remember that next time you visit the Post Office.
